Four different Blue Devils scored two goals apiece and goalkeeper Aaron Fenton recorded 16 saves to lead 13th-ranked Duke to a 10-8 victory over fifth-ranked Maryland in ACC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon in College Park, Md.
The win pushes the Blue Devils to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in league play while the Terrapins fall to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the ACC. Despite trailing in the all-time series by a 49-13 count, Duke has won five of the last eight and nine of the past 15 meetings between the two schools.
"It was typical Duke-Maryland today," Blue Devil head coach Mike Pressler said. "I'm really proud of our team. We rebounded from a tough opening quarter and grinded it out."
Maryland jumped on top 3-0 with goals by Bill McGlone, Michael Phipps and Joe Walters before Duke got its first tally just 10 seconds into the second period on an extra man goal by Matt Zash. The Blue Devils knotted the game at 3-3 when Matt Danowski and Dan Flannery found the back of the net less than a minute apart. The Terrapins then scored back-to-back goals before Danowski's man-down tally with 46 seconds remaining in the quarter sent the teams into halftime with Maryland ahead, 5-4. Danowski's goal was set up when Nick O'Hara forced a turnover by the Maryland man-up offense.
After Andrew Schwartzman's goal gave the Terrapins a 6-4 advantage early in the third quarter, the Blue Devils utilized a 5-0 run to take the lead for good. After Zash and Kyle Dowd scored to tie the contest, Fred Krom gave Duke the lead with an unassisted goal at the 5:05 mark of the third period. Zack Greer, the nation's leading goal scorer, then registered consecutive goals just 42 seconds apart early in the fourth quarter for a 9-6 lead. Greer increased his season total to 19 goals in four games.
Brendan Healy and Walters responded with goals for Maryland, pulling the Terps within 9-8 with just over five minutes remaining, but Dowd netted his second goal of the afternoon at the 1:28 mark to seal the win for Duke.
Danowski, Dowd, Greer and Zash each scored two goals for the Blue Devils while Walters finished with three goals for Maryland.
The team statistical totals favored the Terrapins, who outshot Duke by a 50-26 margin and picked up 52 ground balls to the Blue Devils' 23. In addition, Maryland won 12-of-20 face-offs.
Duke returns to Durham for a two-game homestand, entertaining Penn State on Tuesday (3 p.m.) and Loyola on Saturday (1 p.m.).
