COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The fifth-ranked Duke field hockey team shut out No. 1 Maryland on the road on Saturday, handing the Terps their first loss of the season, as the Blue Devils came away with a 2-0 victory.
The initial minutes of the game proved to be a battle of defenses as neither team would get a shot off until the 6:13 when sophomore Marian Dickinson netted her 14th goal of the season to put Duke on top, 1-0. Senior Cara-Lynn Lopresti picked up her fifth assist of the year on the play.
Dickinson's goal came on Duke's only shot of the half. The Terps equaled as many shots, as Maryland got off its lone shot of the half at the 17-minute mark. Neither team had a penalty corner in the first half.
To begin the second half, Duke was given two consecutive penalty corners, but was unable to score. A third penalty corner opportunity presented itself at the 59-minute mark, and the Blue Devils capitalized as senior Amy Stopford, fresh off a hat trick last weekend, scored her ninth goal of the season to put the Blue Devils up 2-0. Freshman Brooke Patterson recorded her sixth assist of the season on the play.
Up to that point, Maryland was unable to capitalize on two penalty corners of their own as the Duke defensive unit continued its stellar play. After a Maryland timeout, the Terps were given another penalty corner but again were unable to convert.
Duke held its 2-0 lead throughout the remainder of the second half, as the Blue Devils handed the Terps their first loss of the season in what was a rematch of the 2005 National Championship game, when Maryland came away with a 1-0 win. Duke improves to 9-3 (2-2 ACC) with the win, while Maryland falls to 12-1 (3-1 ACC). The shutout is the Blue Devils' fourth shutout victory of the season; until today, the Terps had not been shut out since the 2004 NCAA Semifinals.
“We've been working so hard to get to this level and today everything paid off and it all came together,” said Duke head coach Beth Bozman. “It was a complete team effort.”
The Blue Devils shot 50 percent on the day, scoring on two of four shot attempts, while Maryland went 0-9 in shot attempts. Terp goalie Kathryn Masson played all 70 minutes for Maryland, facing two shots and securing zero saves as she recorded her first career loss to Duke. Junior Caitlin Williams recorded three saves on the day for the Blue Devils. Both teams had three penalty corners.
Up next for Duke will be a pair of games in Philadelphia, as the Blue Devils take on Villanova and Drexel on Monday, Oct. 7 and Tuesday, Oct. 8, respectively, before returning to Durham from fall break.
