COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Another Duke record fell on the second day of the 2006 ACC Women's Swimming & Diving Championships Thursday, as sophomores Anna Rogers and Danielle Spearman and seniors Nora Stupp and Julia Lewis clocked a 1:35.86 in the 200 freestyle relay, throwing out the old record of 1:35.91. The relay time was the second broken relay record at the ACC Championships, following a 1:44.54 200 medley performance Wednesday.
“The evening session was a continued improvement from what we did during earlier today,” said head coach Dan Colella, who is appearing at his first ACC Championship with the Blue Devils. “It's always great to finish with a school record, and that excitement will carry over to tomorrow morning. We have a lot more swims and hope to have a lot of people return for tomorrow evening's finals.”
Senior Katie Ness finished fourth in the 200 IM finals Thursday, touching in a season-best time of 2:02.71 and posting her second NCAA “B” time of the day. In Thursday's preliminary session, Ness finished third in what was then a season-best time -- 2:02.99.
Senior Nora Stupp also advanced in the 200 IM, taking fourth in the bonus heat to finish 20th overall. After setting a career-best of 2:05.66 in the preliminaries, Stupp finished in 2:05.93 in the finals. Junior Jackie Rodriguez was the third Blue Devil to compete Thursday evening, completing the 500 freestyle bonus heat in 5:01.81 after qualifying with a 5:00.57 in the preliminaries for 22nd place.
Eight individual career-best times were set by Blue Devils Thursday -- Stupp and Dana Rosenberg (2:17.53) in the 200 IM and Lauren Stival (26.66), Stephanie Taylor (26.1), Megan Toney (25.8), Katie Bieze (25.14), Leslie Hartford (25.05) and Anna Rogers (24.14) in the 50 freestyle.
Duke continues its run at the 2006 ACC meet Friday, beginning with preliminaries in the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, women's three-meter diving and men's one-meter diving at 11 a.m. The 7 p.m. finals will feature all of those events except the men's diving as well as the 400 medley relay.
