DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 4 Duke field hockey team defeated ACC rival No. 5 North Carolina in overtime on Saturday at Williams Field, as senior Amy Stopford scored the winning goal on a penalty stroke to give the Blue Devils a 2-1 victory. Stopford is three-for-three on stroke attempts this season.
The first half ended in a scoreless tie as Duke allowed North Carolina to get off just one shot, while attempting eight of their own.
Freshman Amie Survilla then got the Blue Devils on the board two minutes into the second half, as Duke took a 1-0 lead. The goal was Survilla's fourth of the season.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, North Carolina's Karen Mann found the net as the Tar Heels pulled even with the Blue Devils. The remainder of the second half remained scoreless as Duke headed into its second consecutive overtime game.
Eleven minutes into overtime, Stopford netted her third penalty corner of the season to give the Blue Devils a 2-1 win. The goal was the Hillsborough native's fifth of the season.
“Winning never gets old,” said Duke head coach Beth Bozman. “And when you beat Carolina you know you've beaten a good team.”
Duke improves to 7-2 (1-1 ACC) with today's win as North Carolina falls to 6-3 (0-2 ACC). The Blue Devils got off 15 shots while the Tar Heels attempted 11. Junior goalie Caitlin Williams had a stellar day in goal, recording four saves for Duke while North Carolina's Brianna O'Donnell picked up six saves. Duke received seven penalty corners on the day, while North Carolina had four.
The Blue Devils have won five of the last six meetings with the Tar Heels. Duke takes a 1-0 lead in the 2006-07 Carlyle Cup race, as the Blue Devils defeated the Tar Heels in field hockey for the second consecutive year. North Carolina won last year's race, 14-12. The Carlyle Cup is the all-sports competition between Duke and North Carolina. It is sponsored by Caryle & Co., a Greensboro-based jewelry company.
The Blue Devils finish out their six-game home stand next weekend as Duke welcomes Boston College and Harvard to Durham. Both games are set to begin at 1 p.m. at Williams Field.
