IOWA CITY, IOWA - The third-ranked Duke field hockey team improved to 4-0 on the season Sunday afternoon as the Blue Devils came from behind to post a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 12 Iowa. Senior Hilary Linton recorded the game-winning goal four minutes into the overtime period, as she netted her first goal of the season in dramatic fashion.
The first half saw Iowa's Caitlin McCurdy, 2005 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, put the Hawkeyes up 1-0 as Iowa capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity at the 28:31 mark. Duke took five shots in the first half, but was unable to get past Hawkeye goalkeeper Lissa Munley, who recorded seven saves on the day, as the Blue Devils found themselves down 1-0 at the halftime break.
McCurdy struck again just after the start of the second half, putting the Hawkeyes on top 2-0, before sophomore midfielder Ashley Pultorak found a rebounded shot near the net and pushed the ball past Munley to put the Blue Devils on the board at the 42:28 mark, making the score 2-1. The goal was Pultorak's third of the season.
With just four minutes remaining in the contest, senior Amy Stopford slammed a deflected shot past Munley to tie the game at two apiece, as the midfielder recorded her third goal on the year. Iowa was given a penalty corner opportunity with 10 seconds to go in regulation, but junior goalkeeper Caitlin Williams recorded her only save of the day to force the game into overtime.
Duke held Iowa shotless and scoreless in overtime, as Linton netted the game-winning goal four minutes into the period and came away with a 3-2 victory.
“Iowa played an exceptional first half,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “This game was a real gut-check for us. We've been winning games but not playing how we've wanted to play. After Iowa went up 2-0, we completely switched gears and snapped into Duke Field Hockey, and that made all the difference in the game.”
The Blue Devils took 21 shots on the day, while the Hawkeyes, now 1-3 on the season, made just five attempts at the net. Penalty corners were sparse in the first half as each team received just one, but Iowa gave Duke nine second-half penalty corners while Duke allowed Iowa just four.
Duke begins its conference slate next weekend as the Blue Devils travel to Wake Forest to take on the No. 2 Demon Deacons on Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. On Sept. 10, Duke returns home to host No. 17 Boston University at Williams Field, with action set to begin at 1 p.m. on that day as well. The game vs. Boston begins a six-game home stand for the Blue Devils, running through Oct. 1.
