HAVERFORD, Pa. ? The Duke fencing team opened their season on Saturday at the Philadelphia Invitational with the women's squad posting a 5-2 record while the men's squad went 4-1. The women's team posted wins over Cornell, Drew, Fairleigh Dickinson, Sacred Heart and Vassar but fell to Temple and Northwestern. The men's squad defeated Drew, Haverford, Sacred Heart and Vassar with their lone loss coming against Rutgers.
The women's foil and saber squads both went 5-2 on the day to lead the Blue Devils. Sophomore Alexandra Stein led the foil squad with a 16-3 mark on the day, while junior Marilyn Tycer went 13-8, sophomore Stephanie Butnick was 12-8 and freshman Noel Shaskan went 2-1.
Senior Allison Schafer anchored the saber squad with an 18-3 record while senior Annie Massart went 14-7. Sophomore Jessica Hancock was 7-10 on the day and junior Amanda Goldenberg went 2-2.
The women's epee squad went 4-3 on the day, led by senior Anne Kercsmar, who posted a 19-2 record. Senior Theresa Poulos finished 12-7, freshman Nicole Bloom went 5-14 and freshman Jenny Kim was 1-3.
The men's foil and saber squads both went 5-0 on the day to lead the Blue Devils. Junior Ben Hendricks led the foil squad with a 13-2 mark, while freshman Eliot Cohen finished 12-3, junior Jackson McClam went 7-2 and freshman Andrew Simon was 4-2.
Sophomore Peter Truszkowski paced the saber squad with a 14-1 mark on the day. Senior Michael DiMarco and sophomore Laughlin Stewart both went 11-3 and junior Andrew Sobel added a 1-1 record for Duke.
The men's epee squad finished 1-4 on the day with junior Zachary Moss and senior Theodore Lauzen both posting 7-8 records. Junior Raymond Fan added a 4-11 mark for the Blue Devils.
Duke will travel to University Park, Pa., next weekend before heading to Boston, Mass., Feb. 4. The Blue Devils will then host a meet Feb. 9-10 at home prior to the Junior Olympics Feb. 16-19 in Denver, Colo. The Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships will take place March 10 in Madison, N.J. and the NCAA Championships are slated for March 21-24 in Drew, N.J.
