DURHAM, N.C. ? Both the Duke men's and women's fencing teams went 3-1 at the Duke Invitational over the weekend to cap successful team seasons. The men's team finishes the year 13-6, while the women's team finishes 13-9.
The foil squad led the men's team on the year with a 14-5 mark, while the saber squad went 13-6 and the epee squad was 2-17. The women's team was paced by the epee squad, who went 15-7. The saber squad finished 14-8 and the foil squad was 12-10.
The men's foil squad went 4-0 on Friday at the Duke Fencing Invitational. Junior Ben Hendricks paced the foil squad with an 11-1 record on the day. Freshman Eliot Cohen went 9-3, freshman Andrew Simon was 6-2, junior Jackson McClam finished 1-2 and senior Michael Bruno was 0-1.
The men's saber squad went 3-1 on Friday with sophomore Peter Truszkowski finishing 9-3. Senior Michael DiMarco went 7-4, sophomore Laughlin Stewart was 7-5 and freshman David Eitel finished 1-1.
The men's epee squad finished 0-4 on Friday with junior Zachary Moss pacing the team with a 6-0 mark. Junior Raymond Fan went 3-9, senior Theodore Lauzen was 2-10 and freshman Thomas Grothe finished 0-6.
The women's epee, foil and saber squads all went 3-1 on Saturday. Senior Anne Kercsmar paced the epee squad with a 10-2 mark, freshman Nicole Bloom was 6-4, senior Theresa Poulos went 6-6, freshman Camille Ratliff finished 1-0 and freshman Jenny Kim was 0-1.
Junior Marilyn Tycer finished 10-2 for the foil squad, while sophomore Alexandra Stein was 7-5 and sophomore Stephanie Butnick went 6-6.
Senior Allison Schafer went 9-3 to lead the saber squad, while senior Annie Massart finished 7-5, junior Amanda Goldenberg was 4-4 and sophomore Jessica Hancock went 1-3.
Both the men's and women's teams defeated rival North Carolina to earn a point in the Carlyle Cup standings, which is a year-long all-sports competition between the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels. North Carolina currently holds a 7.5-6.5 lead over Duke in the Carlyle Cup race.
The Blue Devils will send two fencers to next week's Junior Olympics in Denver, Colo.
