COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Matt Danowski matched his career-high with six goals and
Dan Loftus registered 14 saves as second-ranked Duke defeated sixth-ranked Maryland, 14-7, in front of over 5,000 fans at Byrd Stadium in College Park, Md.
The Blue Devils improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in ACC play while the Terrapins fall to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the league.
"I thought we improved over our play last weekend," said Duke head coach
John Danowski. "We played as a team and everybody contributed. We were fortunate to beat a good team tonight on the road. I honestly didn't know what to expect coming in here, but the guys responded well to being on the road for the first time."
Danowski's lone assist of the night gave Duke a 1-0 lead when he fed
Gibbs Fogarty for a goal just over one minute into the contest. Maryland countered by scoring just 16 seconds later when Will Dalton scooped up the face-off and beat Loftus.
A 3-0 run put the Blue Devils ahead for good.
Peter Lamade scored on an assist from
Fred Krom at the 10:52 mark, and Danowski followed with back-to-back goals just 2:46 apart to push Duke ahead, 4-1. Maryland's Max Ritz tallied an unassisted goal of the quarter to trim the lead to 4-2.
The second period featured goals by
Sam Payton and
Brad Ross in the first five minutes, extending the margin to four at 6-2. After Nick Ward found the back of the net for the Terps, Danowski posted two more tallies to send the teams into halftime with Duke ahead, 8-3.
Danowski scored his final two goals of the night in the third period with teammates
Nick O'Hara and Fogarty also scoring in the quarter as the Blue Devils built a 12-5 advantage. Three of O'Hara's seven career goals have come against the Terrapins.
Zack Greer, who had a game-high three assists on the evening, scored his ninth goal of the year while
Ned Crotty tallied late in the fourth quarter to account for the final margin.
Danowski's six goals match his career single-game best effort set in 2005 at Army. With his seven points on the night, the Farmingdale, N.Y., native now has 175 career points on 95 goals and 80 assists to rank in 11th place on Duke's all-time scoring chart. In seven career games versus Maryland, Danowski has 27 points on 17 goals and 10 assists.
