WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The No. 3 Duke women's lacrosse team succumbed to a late run by eighth-ranked Georgetown, dropping Saturday afternoon's contest to the Hoyas, 12-11, at Multi-Sport Field. The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 6-2 on the year, while Georgetown improves to 4-2 with today's victory.
After trailing 5-3 at halftime, Duke mounted a second-half comeback to take a 10-8 lead ? thanks to a four-goal run between the 16:19 and 9:13 mark in the second frame. But the Hoyas would rally with four straight of their own to retake control, 12-10, with 1:26 to play. Carolyn Davis scored to cut it to 12-11 with 30 seconds left, but the Blue Devils ran out of time in the contest.
Seniors Caroline Cryer and Megan Del Monte led all Blue Devils with a hat trick, while Davis tallied two scores and Lindsay Gilbride, Sarah Bullard, and Kat Thomas all netted one.
The Hoyas' Molly Ford scored four goals to lead all players on the day, which included two in Georgetown's late-game run. Jordy Kirr added three for GU.
Despite holding a 28-18 edge in the shot column, Duke was unable to convert on scoring chances and was also outdone on ground balls, 14-8. The Blue Devils won 14 draw controls to Georgetown's 10.
After the Hoyas scored first in the game, the Blue Devils went up 2-1 on a pair of Del Monte scores, but GU held control until the 9:13 mark in the second. There were five ties in the game.
Duke now guards a 10-7 lead over Georgetown, although today snapped the Blue Devils' five-game winning streak in the series.
Duke will look to rebound with a two-game homestand next week at Koskinen Stadium ? where the squad is a perfect 4-0 on the season ? hosting Virginia Tech on Wed., March 18 and Canisius on Fri., March 20. The game versus Canisius will mark the first-ever meeting between the programs.
