Rowing Notches Top-20 Finish at the Princeton Chase

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Duke rowing team sent its top boat to the Princeton Chase on Sunday and garnered a 20th-place finish out of 51 competitors in the varsity 8 on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.

The Blue Devils used the octet of Emily Theys, Rory Erickson-Kulas, Kathy Smithwick, Laura Sciarrino, Grace Cassidy, Claire Vannelli, Sophia Blair and Katie Burke to power their eight along with coxswain Caroline Kiritsy. Duke finished the three-mile race with a time of 16:04.06. Duke's 2V8 of Sarah Baker, Shaye Beattie, Elizabeth Howell, Victoria Tsamis, Sydney Johnson, Nancy McKinstry, Tori Arendt, Laura Guth and Lissa Glynn finished 35^thoverall (16:47.24).

Top-three finishes in the 1x, open 2 and 2x races also highlighted the Duke rowing team's finishes at the Princeton Chase.

In the 1x, Theys grabbed first place with a time of 22:24.59, while Claire Vannelli took second with a time of 22:41.53.

The 2x duo of Burke and Vannelli captured first place with a time of 18:03.08 followed by Duke's second entry boat of McKinstry and Laura Guth in second (19:35.05).

In the open 2-, Theys and Rory-Erickson-Kulas teamed up to take third with a time of 18:50.13. Duke also captured fifth with Smithwick and Sciarrino with a time of 19:57.58

The Blue Devil novice eight of Kathryn Cooper, Kara Risser, Julie Rohde, Brielle Batesko, Patricia Kolman, Caroline Williams, Tara Dalton, Blair and Alexander Enzor finished eighth with a time of 17:15.92.

Next week, the team will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., to compete in the Head of the Hooch on Saturday, Nov. 5.
