PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The No. 10 Duke women's fencing team swept
all five opponents in its first dual meet of the season, taking down Haverford,
Johns Hopkins and Fairleigh Dickinson by scores of 25-2, NJIT 23-4 and Cornell 22-5 at the
University of Pennsylvania.
All three weapons were a perfect 5-0 as well as the Blue Devils (5-0) outscored
their four opponents 120-15 in their first team meet of the 2012 season. The
women's saber squad, led by two-time NCAA Champion 2008 Olympic bronze medalist
Becca Ward, gave up just one point during the entire meet.
Ward, who won the North American Cup last weekend in Portland, Ore., was one
of two Blue Devils who posted a perfect 15-0 day, joining fellow saber and
sophomore teammate Kodia Baye-Cigna. The third member of Duke's starting
sabers, Sean Cadley, finished 14-1 as Duke's sabers are on pace to
match their school-record 22-1 record from 2011.
The Blue Devil epees used four fencers on the way to outscoring their four
opponents 39-6. Two-time All-American Emily D'Agostino, sophomore Mary Tung and freshman Sarah Collins all went 11-1, and sophomore
Lauren DeLucia went finished 6-3. Collins is off to a hot start in her
freshman campaign after opening the season with a 12th-place finish
in the Junior Women's Epee division at the North American Cup last weekend,
Lily Shepard paced the women's foils with an 14-1 record, while senior Dana Rosen went 12-3 and freshman Elizabeth Malcolm went 11-4. Shepard's only loss
came in the foil team's 5-4 win over Cornell, but she also clinched that same
bout with a 5-4 victory that gave Duke its fifth point of the match.
The Duke men will compete on day two of the Philadelphia Invitational on
Sunday. Fencing begins at 9 a.m.
