
Blue Devils Wrap Up First Weekend Of Fall

CARY, N.C. – The Blue Devils concluded their first tournament of the fall season Sunday at the Duke Fab Four Invitational, held at the Cary Tennis Park. Highlighting the day for Duke was a runner-up finish in singles in the white draw, a singles consolation champion in the black draw and a doubles title in the white draw.
In singles action, junior Bruno Semenzato finished in second place in the white draw after falling to Kentucky's Beck Pennington 6-3, 6-2.
In the black draw, junior Daniel McCall earned the title in the consolation finals as he defeated William & Mary's Will Juggins 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Nicolas Alvarez earned a third-place finish with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Wake Forest's Sam Bloom. Rounding out the draw for Duke was senior Raphael Hemmeler, who downed Louisville's Jeffrey Brown in the draw's fifth-place match 6-3, 6-4.
Wrapping up the singles play for the Blue Devils was redshirt senior Cale Hammond, who earned a fifth-place finish in the blue draw with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over VCU's Joseph Cohen.
The Blue Devils earned their draw championship in white doubles as redshirt senior Chris Mengel and Hemmeler combined to defeat Kentucky's Jerry Lopez and Beck Pennington 8-7 (5).
Duke's McCall and Hammond took home third place in the black doubles draw with an 8-1 victory against Wake Forest's Nicky Kuntz and Nicholas Osterling.
The duo of Alvarez and Semenzato finished second in the blue draw, suffering a narrow setback to Louisville's Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Michael Lippens 8-7 (4).
Duke returns to action Saturday, Sept. 27, as part of the ITA All-American Qualifying Rounds in Tulsa, Okla.
