DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke field hockey program placed 11 student-athletes on the 2014 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad, as announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Monday, March 23. It marked the fourth consecutive year the Blue Devils had 10 or more players earn the academic award.
The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2014-15 academic year.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Lauren Blazing was named to the National Academic Squad for the fourth-straight year. Juniors Hannah Barreca, Amanda Kim and Sarah Urdahl appeared on the list for the third time in their careers, while senior Abby Beltrani, junior Aileen Johnson and sophomores Robin Blazing, Heather Morris and Savannah Story were recognized for the second consecutive season. Freshmen Sarah Furey and Meghan Norair were among the first-time recipients of the academic honor.
The Blue Devils' 11 selections to the National Academic Squad ranked second among ACC institutions.
As a team, Duke also garnered a 2014 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award earlier this month. In addition, Lauren and Robin Blazing were selected Scholars of Distinction after achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher during the first semester of the 2014-15 academic year.
