Blue Devils Win V8 Grand Final at Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO – Duke's V8 earned first place in the Cal Cup Grand Final and the 2V8 also competed in a grand final as the Blue Devils' rowing team wrapped up the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday afternoon.

The third of Duke's boats to race on Sunday was the highlight of the weekend as the Blue Devils' V8 won the Cal Cup Grand Final. Duke finished in 6:51.46, three seconds faster than its race on Saturday, to claim the title. The women also were nearly five seconds ahead of the second-place Kansas State boat. The last time the Blue Devils raced in the Crew Classic's V8 grand final, the boat came in sixth place. Duke's last V8 win at the Crew Classic came in 2012.

Duke's V4 began the final day of competition in the petite final of the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup. The boat clocked a time of 8:18.01 to take fourth place.

The Blue Devils' 2V8 took part in the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Grand Final and placed sixth with a time of 7:05.13. The mark was more than a six-second improvement from the boat's time on Saturday (7:11.85).

Finishing the action in San Diego was the 2V4, which took part in the finals only Women's Collegiate 4+ B race. The group finished in 8:17.19 to place third, one spot higher than it entered the race seeded.

The Blue Devils now have nearly two weeks off before returning to the water on Saturday, April 11, against Columbia and Northeastern in Leonia, N.J.
