OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Duke rowing team kicked off its spring season Sunday morning with an exhibition against Tennessee on Lake Melton.
“It was exciting to get on the water and test our speed,” head coach Robyn Horner said. “This was great race experience and will help us as we prepare to race next weekend at Clemson.”
Sunday morning the squads raced 1,500 meters, slightly shorter than the traditional 2,000-meter spring race. The boats covered the 1,500-meter distance four times.
All of the eights raced together, with Duke and Tennessee each being represented by two boats. The Blue Devil V8 captured all four races. Duke's 2V8 lost close battles to the Lady Vols during the first two pieces and then won the last two pieces.
“It was great to see our improvement with each piece,” Horner added.
In fours, Duke's three boats and Tennessee's two boats raced together. The Blue Devils' top crew won all four segments. The Duke 3V4 and 2V4 finished second and third in the first two pieces.
Next for the Blue Devils is the official spring opener, at Clemson on Saturday. There, Duke will compete against the host Tigers, Boston and Syracuse.
