Duke Tallies Four Top-Two Finishes at Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Duke rowing team began its regular season competition with four top-two finishes Saturday at Lake Hartwell. The Blue Devils raced against Clemson and Boston University's lightweight team. Duke's V8 and V4 crews each finished second two times in the six total races during the morning's competition.

Racing on the home water of ACC rival Clemson, Duke began the day with its V4 finishing second behind the Tigers in a time of 7:54.41. The Blue Devils' 2V4 came in third (7:57.75) while the Clemson V4 (7:49.30) and 2V4 (8:07.23) took first and fourth, respectively.

The second race of the morning featured the Boston lightweight 2V8, Duke's 3V8 and Clemson's 3V8 and 4V8. The Tigers' 3V8 won with a mark of 7:15.61 with BU (7:18.79), Duke (7:27.77) and Clemson's 4V8 (7:28.17) placing second, third and fourth.

In the two main event races featuring the V8s, Duke placed second both times. Clemson won both V8 races, clocking times of 6:40.85 and 6:48.89. The Blue Devils' top crew finished in 6:47.53 and 6:54.44 to trail the Tigers in both races. Duke's 2V8 competed in the same races and finished fourth twice, behind Clemson's 1V8 and 2V8 as well as the Blue Devils' 1V8. Duke's 2V8 finished in 6:56.82 and 7:01.70.

In the second race among V4s, Duke's 1V4 took second in 8:00.37, finishing behind only Clemson's 1V4 time of 7:51.21. The Duke 2V4 placed fourth with a time of 8:24.00.

Duke's 3V8 competed in one race, finishing third in 7:33.15. Clemson's 3V8 boat won with a time of 7:17.68 with Boston's lightweight 2V8 placing second (7:20.55).

The race on Lake Hartwell marks the first of three trips to Clemson, S.C., for the Duke rowing team as the squad will return for the Clemson Invitational April 18-19 and the ACC Championship May 15-16.

Duke returns to action March 28 at the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, Calif.
