CLEMSON, S.C. – The Duke rowing team returned to the water Saturday at Lake Hartwell and had five boats race two times each with the V8, 2V8, 3V8, V4 and 2V4. The Blue Devils, racing against seven squads ranked in the latest Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association nation poll, earned one second-place finish and four fifth-place performances during the opening day of the Clemson Invitational.

Duke's top showing came from its 2V8, which came in second during the morning session with a time of 6:54.3. Louisville won the race in 6:50.4 with Michigan State, Penn, Cornell, Gonzaga and Oklahoma placing third through seventh.

The first of Duke's four fifth-place finishes was turned in by the V8, which recorded a time of 6:53.1 in the morning session. Cornell took first in 6:39.9. The Blue Devils' 3V8 placed fifth in its first race of the day, clocking a time of 7:31.3. Michigan State's novice 8 (6:54.3) won.

Duke picked up two more fifth places in the afternoon session, by the 3V8 again and the 2V8. The 3V8 cut more than 20 seconds off its morning time and finished in 7:10.5, while Michigan State's novice 8 took first again, in 6:43.5. The Blue Devils' 2V8 also shed seconds off its time, ending in 6:49.8 in the afternoon to place fifth. Harvard's crew won the afternoon race with a time of 6:37.8.

In the morning session, Duke participated in two more races with the V4 placing sixth (8:09.7) and the 2V4 finishing seventh (8:09.2). Louisville's V4 took the morning session in 7:46.1 while the Ohio State boat won the 2V4 race in 7:37.8.

The Blue Devils' V4 and 2V4 also raced in the afternoon, with the V4 whittling nearly 20 seconds off the first performance to finish seventh with a mark of 7:51.8. Harvard took the afternoon race in 7:26.3. The 2V4 placed sixth in 8:00.3, almost nine seconds faster than the morning time. Ohio State's 2V4 won the afternoon session in 7:28.6.

Finishing off the Blue Devils' day was the V8, which clocked a time of 6:45.6 to take sixth in the afternoon session. The time was also nearly an eight-second improvement from the morning.

The Blue Devils end the regular season with Sunday's five races. Action begins at 8 a.m. ET with the 3V8.
