CLEMSON, S.C. – The Duke rowing team began the spring with an impressive second-place performance at the Carolina Cup on Lake Hartwell. The Blue Devils competed against host Clemson and North Carolina and won four races, claiming the V8, 2V8, V4 and exhibition 3V4. Duke tallied victories in four of the five races it competed in and finished second overall with 89 points, behind Clemson's 90 and the Tar Heels' 78.
“This was a great day for Duke,” first-year head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno said. “The team learned many lessons today, first being the importance of the team and the roles we all play. We didn't come home with the Daughtry Cup, but I'm very satisfied with the wins in the NCAA boats. We have a lot of work to do, but considering the amount of work we've done this week, we're in a good spot.”
The Blue Devils began the day with a second-place showing in the 2V4, finishing with a 7:34.7 mark to finish second to Clemson's 7:31.6 and in front of UNC's 7:39.9.
Duke went on to win the final three races, beginning with the V4. The Blue Devils clocked a 7:20.5 to blow past Clemson (7:32.1) and North Carolina (7:39.0).
“I'm proud of this team and how hard they work to win,” Cooke Carcagno added. “It's a new culture, and their success on the water is a testament to embracing a winning culture.”
The 2V8 also had a Duke win, finishing in 6:37.6 to edge past the Tigers (6:39.6) and Tar Heels (7:00.4).
The Blue Devils finished the day with a win in the main event, claiming the V8 in 6:29.8.
“Today was all about a fresh start and new era for Duke women's rowing,” senior co-captain Simone Pitre said. “I'm incredibly proud of my team for their hard work and pure guts on the race course today. This is only the beginning. I'm looking forward to the push to NCAAs and couldn't be more excited for what is to come.”
Duke also claimed a win in the exhibition 3V4, its fourth victory of the event.
The Blue Devils return to action to begin the regular season Saturday, March 26, in Redwood Shores, Calif., for the Pac12 Challenge.
