DURHAM, N.C. – Junior attackman Jack Bruckner scored five goals and added two assists to lead No. 9 Duke to a 20-6 win over visiting Georgetown on Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. The win is the third straight for the Blue Devils as they enter into ACC play next weekend.
The Blue Devils improve to 6-3 while the Hoyas fall to 1-6.
Justin Guterding added three goals and three assists to the offensive output, while junior goaltender Danny Fowler made nine saves on 12 shots on goal. Blue Devil seniors John Shaffer and Joe Kruy threw in their first goals of the season and rookie Brad Smith finished with a career-high three points on a goal and two helpers.
“I think we rallied around the [losses to Harvard and Richmond] and really came together and reflected on ourselves,” said Bruckner. “We buckled down and went back to the fundamentals of putting the ball on each other's stick and just have been playing simple.”
Bruckner scored all five of his goals in the first half as Duke rolled to a 13-2 advantage at intermission. Class (4), Guterding and Case Matheis (2) joined Bruckner with multiple goals on the afternoon. Class and Matheis also contributed three assists each.
“I don't think we exploited [Georgetown's] defense specifically,” Bruckner said. “I think all the practice we had this week really paid off. Going into next week we just have to stay on it and practice on our own and shooting by ourselves.”
Kyle Rowe keyed Duke's faceoff success by winning 19-of-23 draws while picking up 14 ground balls and scoring a goal. In the Duke net, Fowler (9 saves & 3 goals allowed in 37:20), Luke Aaron (3 saves & 3 goals allowed in 20:15) and David McCann (0 saves & 0 goals allowed in 2:25) combined to limit the Hoyas to six goals on 33 shots.
Duke's special teams were outstanding as well, going 3-of-4 on man-up and a perfect 3-of-3 in man-down situations. Overall, the Blue Devils scored 20 goals on 33 shots, including going 13-of-14 in the first half.
For Georgetown, Devon Harris recorded two goals and one assist. Starting goalkeeper Nick Marrocco logged four saves against 15 goals allowed in 33:15 between the pipes.
Duke hosts Air Force Tuesday, March 22 at 7 p.m., on ESPN3. The Blue Devils open ACC play March 26 against No. 3 Syracuse at 12 p.m., on ESPNU.
“I think right now as we leave spring break, there's a confidence level that we didn't have two weeks ago,” said head coach John Danowski. “Certainly there's also an experience level. We've now played nine games, which is a lot. It allows us that we can be playing our best in the next month.”
