NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame held Duke's high-powered offense to just six goals and two in the second half in an 8-6 win for the No. 2 Irish over 12th-ranked Duke in front of 5,000 at Arlotta Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Devils fall to 7-6 on the year and 1-2 in ACC play, while Notre Dame improves to 8-1 and 3-0 against conference foes. Notre Dame led for just 4:45 in the game, scoring the go-ahead goal with 4:45 to play in the fourth.
Justin Guterding led all Duke scorers with four points, while Danny Fowler was outstanding between the pipes for the Blue Devils with 12 saves. The Blue Devils defense held Notre Dame attackman Matt Kavanagh without a point for the first time this season, while Sergio Perkovic paced the Irish offense with a hat trick.
Duke and Notre Dame traded goals in the opening half that featured a pair of ties and just seven overall goals. Guterding put the Blue Devils on the board the first two minutes into the game as the squads battled defensively to head into the first break knotted 2-2.
The Blue Devils scored the first two goals of the second period for their first multiple goal lead. Chad Cohan finished a Myles Jones assist late in the second frame to give the Blue Devils the 4-2 edge. Duke's defense was outstanding in the first half, forcing eight turnovers and holding the Irish to 15 shots, to take a 4-3 lead into halftime.
Ian Yanulis was strong both in the box and on the faceoff wing, recording three ground balls and a caused turnover in the opening half. Danny Fowler had four saves, including a point-blank stop on a fastbreak chance from the Irish. He finished with 12 saves on the afternoon, including five in the fourth quarter.
Nothing changed in the third quarter as Duke scored first before going on an 11-minute scoring drought. Notre Dame scored two unanswered in that stretch to tie the game 5-5 after 45 minutes of lacrosse. Guterding had Duke's lone goal in the third quarter.
The Duke offense continued to struggle in the fourth quarter, being held to just one goal. Notre Dame took advantage and scored two unanswered in the final seven minutes, including the go-ahead goal with 4:45 from Perkovic.
Deemer Class snuck past his defenseman in the right wing and dropped one past Shane Doss to put the Blue Devils up 6-5, but a scramble on the ensuing faceoff resulted in a transition goal for the Irish to make it 6-6 and spark the Irish's three-goal run to finish the game.
Kyle Rowe won 11-of-18 faceoffs and picked up seven ground balls. Yanulis finished the game with four ground balls and a caused turnover.
Shane Doss recorded 11 saves for Notre Dame in the win.
Duke closes out its regular season ACC schedule at No. 20 Virginia next Sunday. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m., on ESPN2.
