DURHAM, N.C. – After rounding out the 2012 Olympic Games in last place, the U.S. women's field hockey team made a historic run to the quarterfinal round in Rio.
Despite falling short of its goal with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Germany Monday, Team USA made headlines with victories over hockey powerhouses Argentina (ranked second in the world) and Australia (the world's third-ranked team) in pool play. Blue Devil alumna Stefanie Fee and the U.S. squad set a program record with three wins in pool play before emerging with the No. 2 seed in Group B.
Fee played in every Olympics contest for the U.S., coming off the bench to bolster a standout defensive unit.
Duke head coach Pam Bustin, who represented the United States at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, said the 2016 team's Olympic run has been inspiring for the current Blue Devil squad to follow throughout their own preseason training.
