LONG BEACH, Calif. – For the second time in the past two seasons, Duke and Long Beach State battled to five sets with the 49ers able to defeat the Blue Devils 3-2 (25-20, 15-25, 25-11, 23-25, 8-15) Friday evening at Walter Pyramid.
Duke (4-3) led 2-1 overall and held a 21-19 advantage in the fourth before Long Beach State (4-3) stormed back. LBSU used a 6-1 run to close out the fourth and scored eight of the fifth set's first 11 points to take command of the match late.
Freshman outside hitter Jamie Stivers turned in a double-double, accounting for a career-high 17 kills to go along with 12 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Leah Meyer added 14 kills on a team-best .393 hitting percentage.
Duke's offense began the match in sync, putting down 15 kills, including five from Meyer, in a 25-20 first set victory.
Long Beach State utilized eight blocks to win a decisive 25-15 second set. The 49ers went on a 15-3 run to break open the frame and tie the match 1-1 overall.
Duke rebounded in the third, claiming the stanza 25-11. The Blue Devils hit a match-high .419 in that frame.
The Blue Devils secured a 21-19 lead late in the fourth courtesy of kills from Tucker and Bartholomew, but Long Beach State rallied for a 6-1 run to force a fifth set. The Beach received kills from Missy Owens and Yizhi Xue coupled with a pair of Duke attack errors to swing momentum/.
Up 3-1 in the fifth, Long Beach State received two consecutive aces to establish an early four-point advantage. Duke was unable to threaten in the final stanza, falling behind 8-3 by the midway point. The Blue Devils fought off a couple match points, but could not overcome the deficit in the end.
Defensively, libero Sasha Karelov had a match-high 24 digs, while defensive specialist Nicole Elattrache added 12.
Long Beach State totaled 20.5 blocks, including a match-high 11 from Xue. Nele Barber had a match-high 19 kills and was joined by Ashley Murray (13) and Hailey Harward (10) in double-digit kills.
Duke concludes its southern California road trip with a match against No. 25 Loyola Marymount Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. (EDT) in Los Angeles.
