LOS ANGELES – Duke fell at No. 25 Loyola Marymount to conclude the 2016 LBSU/LMU Baden Invitational, dropping a 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-18) decision to the Lions Saturday evening at Gersten Pavilion.
Duke (4-4) struggled to slow the Loyola Marymount (6-3) offense as the Lions hit .343 for the match, committing just nine errors on 105 attempts.
For the Blue Devils, sophomore Jessi Bartholomew led Duke with 11 kills, followed by freshman Jamie Stivers with 10. Libero Sasha Karelov paced the defense with a match-high 15 digs.
The Lions put down 16 kills and committed one error in a 25-21 first set victory. LMU turned a 10-10 tie into a 15-11 advantage behind three kills from Sarah Sponcil. Duke could not pull within three the rest of the way and LMU clinched the 1-0 victory on a Blue Devil attack error.
Down 16-11 in the second, Duke made a run to take a 22-21 lead on a Bartholomew kill. LMU responded with back-to-back kills before Stivers tied the set with a kill of her own. The Lions' Jamie Lea notched two of her eight kills to seal the victory, 26-24.
Duke and Loyola Marymount traded the first 20 points before the Lions went on a 10-5 run. The Lions hit .393 in the third set and finished the match with the 25-18 victory.
The Blue Devils return to Cameron Indoor Stadium Friday, Sept. 16 to take on Campbell at 6:30 p.m.
