NOTES |
DURHAM, N.C. – Tenth-ranked Duke lifts the lid on the 2017 campaign Sunday by facing Drexel of the CAA for the first time in program history. The Blue Devils return eight starters from an 11-9 2016 season, which saw the squad reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Looking Back at 2016
• Duke compiled an 11-9 ledger in 2016 and ranked 11th in the final Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll.
• The Blue Devils earned the program's 19th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, reaching the second round.
• Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea totaled 181 stops to rank second on Duke's single season list and wrapped up her career with 613 saves to become only the third goalkeeper in ACC history to reach 600 saves for her career.
• Duryea (first team), Maddie Crutchfield (second team) and Kyra Harney (third team) all garnered All-America honors from the IWLCA.
All-Region Returners
• Duke returns a trio of all-region selections this spring in senior defender Maura Schwitter, junior midfielder Maddie Crutchfield and junior attacker Kyra Harney.
• A preseason All-ACC pick, Crutchfield led the Blue Devils in caused turnovers (32) in 2016 and was tied for first in assists (20).
• Harney was the team's leader in points (68) and goals (51) a year ago, and headlines an attack that returns 61 percent of its goal scoring from a year ago.
• Schwitter ranked second on the 2016 squad in draw controls (39) and caused turnovers (16) and was a key part of a defense that logged an 8.60 goals against average in 2016.
Jenner Back on the Draw
• Sophomore attacker Olivia Jenner returns to the draw circle after spearheading Duke's effort at the draw as a rookie in 2016.
• Last season saw Jenner surpass Emma Hamm ('12) for the most draw controls recorded by a Duke player in a single season with 110.
• Jenner enters the 2017 campaign tied for 11th on the Blue Devils' all-time career list in the category.
• Duke went 7-4 in 2016 when winning the draw, and will look to continue that trend this spring.
New Look Between the Pipes
• Following the graduation of four-year starting goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea, a veteran defensive unit will look to support a new face in goal this spring.
• A two-time All-American, Duryea concluded her Duke career ranked second in program history in saves (613) and goalkeeper wins (48).
• The Blue Devils enter the spring with the services of junior Oralee Hespenheide and sophomore Jamie Lockwood, who started last weekend's scrimmage against Delaware.
• Freshman Gabbe Cadoux joined the goalkeeper group out of McDonogh School (Md.), where she was a three-year starter and Under Armour All-American.
New Faces to Know
• Duke head coach Kerstin Kimel made two additions to the coaching staff during the offseason, welcoming assistant coach Lars Keil and volunteer assistant Morgan Heisman.
• A defensive specialist, Keil came to Duke from Providence, R.I., where he was an assistant for the Brown men's lacrosse program during a historic 2016 campaign that saw the Bears make their first national semifinals appearance since 1994.
• A former goalkeeper at James Madison, Heisman has previously spent time as an assistant coach at Dartmouth and George Mason.
• The Blue Devils also welcomed six freshmen to the program this season in goalkeeper Gabbe Cadoux, midfielder Catherine Cordrey, attacker Sam DeBellis, midfielder Callie Humphrey, midfielder Lindsey Reynolds and midfielder Lexi Rieu.
• Kimel further bolstered the Duke roster with the addition of graduate student Jessie Ambrose, who was a three-year starter in the midfield at Columbia.
