CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. β No. 7 Virginia used a last minute goal in regulation and an early overtime corner score to defeat No. 4 Duke, 3-2, in extra time on The University Turf Field Friday evening.
"I thought we played a great game in a great contest tonight," said head coach Pam Bustin. "We were finishing well in the circle, but our corner defense we will need to take a look at and our corner attack we just need to finish and execute better."
Duke redshirt goalkeeper Sammi Steele and Virginia's Lauren Hausheer made their presence known early in goal, recording key saves to keep their teams tied at 0-0. The Cavaliers led in shots, 4-2, after one. The second quarter was much of the same defensively, as both teams went into halftime with a total of five shots, three corners and a 0-0 score.
With just under eight minutes left in the third, sophomore Olivia Sahaydak found the back of the cage for the first score of the game to put Duke up 1-0. Sahaydak moved left to right as Hausheer came out to defend the ball and connected with the back left corner of the goal for her sixth score of the season. The score remained the same going into the fourth quarter.
At the 13:19 mark of the fourth, Virginia tied the game up at one all as Cato Geusgens scored on a corner. The score was the first goal given up by Duke since it played Princeton on Oct. 6.
At the 9:59 mark of the fourth, Sahaydak's shot was saved off the foot of Virginia's Rachel Robinson inside the circle, resulting in a penalty stroke. Senior Haley Schleicher converted the penalty stroke, putting the Blue Devils up 2-1. Duke improved to 3-3 on the season in penalty strokes after the successful attempt.
With 1:02 left in the game, the Cavaliers used an extra attacker corner to its advantage and knotted the game up at 2-2 after Virginia's Anzel Viljoen collected a rebounded shot off of Steele's pads and lofted the ball into the upper right of the cage. The score remained 2-2 at the end of regulation.
"Virginia pulled the goalie and I thought we were managing quite well and away from the center," said Bustin. "We threw an overhead pass and they gained possession and found an outlet and it allowed them to go down the field and find open space which we were not expecting."
A minute and a half into the first overtime, Virginia drew a corner and capitalized, scoring the game-winner off the stick of Amber Ezechiels. The win improved Virginia's overall record to 12-3 and 3-2 in ACC play, while Duke fell to 10-4 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
"We will continue to work together to figure it out, we are putting our heart and souls into it and we are going to keep working together to find success," Bustin said.
Virginia edged Duke in shots 13-12, and led in corners 7-4. Steele collected five saves in the complete game effort.
Duke is back in action Sunday at James Madison. Start time is set for 12 noon.
