DURHAM, N.C. – Freshman Hannah Miller led the offense with two goals and redshirt senior goalkeeper Sammi Steele tallied five saves as the No. 4 Duke field hockey team defeated Richmond, 3-0, at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium Sunday afternoon.
"I'm really proud of the energy they brought today," said head coach Pam Bustin. "I think we took the fourth quarter from yesterday and we wanted to begin the game where we left off, because we were playing some really good hockey at the end of the game yesterday. We scored early and I am really pleased with how we sustained the attack.
Miller's first goal came at the 5:16 mark of the first quarter as she received a pass from freshman Josie Varney inside the box for the score. The assist from Varney was the first point of her Blue Devil career. Duke outshot the Spiders 8-2 in the first half and led 2-0 in corners as the score remained 1-0 going into halftime.
Sophomore Leah Crouse extended the Duke lead to 2-0 after gathering a rebound inside the circle at the 44:45 mark of the third quarter. Duke's defense was tested in the third, as the Spiders totaled six corners for the quarter, but kept Richmond at bay as all shot attempts were saved and blocked.
"Our corner defense played well," said Bustin. "With less than 24 hours to prepare I thought they did a good job with the scout and I think we were able to read the corners well."
Miller sealed the victory with her second goal of the contest, as she took a pass from Schleicher at the 50:06 mark of the fourth quarter and connected with the back-left corner of the cage to put Duke up 3-0. The Blue Devils matched their first half shot total in the second half (8), with five coming in the fourth quarter. Duke led in shots, 16-13, and held Richmond to five shots on goal.
"I think yesterday, even though it was a loss, I think it was the first game our team felt super connected and supporting each other and energized," said senior Haley Schleicher. "Today we built off of that and maintained the connection throughout the game and got better, especially in the attacking 25, using each other and supporting each other around the ball."
With the five saves, Steele moves into sixth all-time in Duke history with 259 career saves. The win was also the 61st of her career. The Blue Devils improved to 12-5 overall on the season, while Richmond fell to 9-8.
"Sammi made some key saves that allowed us to get back on the front foot and the ball back to the 50 and I thought in the fourth quarter we did a great job keeping the ball above the 50," Bustin said.
The Blue Devils are back in action Friday, Nov. 1 at Boston College. Start time is set for 5 p.m.
