GAMEDAY DETAILS
- Faceoff at Matthews Sportsplex is set for 2 p.m. Nearly 2,000 tickets have been sold already so fans need to prepare for slow traffic on gameday due to a youth tournament at the complex. Those games are anticipated to end at 1 p.m., and traffic congestion will increase after.

A BLUE DEVIL RETURNS
- Penn head coach Mike Murphy faces his alma mater for the fifth time as the leader of the Quaker men's lacrosse program.
- Murphy was a three-year starter for the Blue Devils. He captained the 1991 team that finished the season ranked 12th nationally. He graduated in 1991 with a degree in history and political science.
A BATTLE AT THE X AWAITS
- Penn senior faceoff specialist Kyle Gallagher enters the 2020 season as one of the top guys at the X. A third-team All-America pick in 2019, Gallagher ranked second nationally in faceoff wins and was fourth in ground balls per game.
- The combination of Brian Smyth, Joe Stein and Jordan Ginder got the better of Gallagher last season as he won just 10-of-24 draws. It was second worst defeat at the X for Gallagher that season - he went 19-of-40 against Yale – and one of just three games were he won fewer than 50 percent.
- Stein won both of his faceoffs and Ginder went 2-of-5 versus Gallagher in 2019.
LAST TIME OUT
- Duke went on a 7-0 run over a span of 14:37 in the first and second quarters to build an 8-2 lead en route to beating No. 8 Denver, 15-13, at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Eight different Blue Devils registered goals in the victory, including three with a hat trick.
- Defensively, Duke held Denver scoreless for 18:02 and kept the Pioneers to just three shots in the opening quarter. JT Giles-Harris and Tyler Carpenter both had two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
- Jordan Ginder was solid at the X, winning 18-of-28 faceoffs and picking up six ground balls. He won six straight during the 7-0 run. In goal, the combination of Turner Uppgren and Andrew Bonafede had 11 saves.
DUKE'S BALANCE PROVING TO BE DANGEROUS
- In the past two victories, the Blue Devils' balance on offense has proven to be lethal. Duke had eight different goal scorers this against the Pioneers and 11 versus High Point. Just three games into the season, 14 Blue Devils have at least one goal, with six of them being first-time goal scorers.
- In Duke's 7-0 run against Denver, six different players scored a goal. Four different Blue Devils provided assists.
- Duke has had three different leading scorers in the trio of outings – Owen Caputo (Denver), Dyson Williams (High Point) and Joey Manown (Air Force).
- The Blue Devils have run three midfield lines each game this season, garnering success from each one. The balance from the three is incredible: First – 9 points, Second – 23 points, Third – 2 points.
LAST TIME WE MET
- Duke scored eight first-quarter goals and never looked back en route to a 17-7 victory over Penn last season. Joe Robertson and Brad Smith led all scorers with six points apiece.
- Feeling at home on its practice field due to inclement weather, Duke raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first 2:34, thanks to a pair of goals from senior Jake Seau, and eventually built it to a 12-3 halftime advantage.
- Brian Smyth was 13-of-19 at the X and picked up seven ground balls, while the quartet of Jack Fowler, JT Giles-Harris, Cade Van Raaphorst and Turner Uppgren all had two caused turnovers apiece while stifling the Quaker offense. Giles-Harris and Van Raaphorst also scooped up three ground balls.
LOOKING AT DUKE
- Duke jumped to 10th in the USILA poll this week following the victory at Denver.
- The Blue Devils' balanced offense is led by sophomore Owen Caputo's 12 points (5g, 7a). Attackmen Joey Manown and Dyson Williams are right behind him with seven goals and three assists for 10 points. Fifteen Duke players have at least one goal.
- A young defensive corps on defense continues to grow and gel. JT Giles-Harris is the anchor on defense, drawing the toughest matchup. He has eight ground balls and four caused turnovers. Rookie Kenny Brower is the first true freshman to start on close defense since Giles-Harris. Sophomore Braden Burke rounds out the trio on the crease.
- A host of short stick defensive middies and long poles bolster the improving defense. Terry Lindsay is a four-year starter, while Blake Leischow is back for his second season as regular in the SSDM role. Matt Chmil and Jake Caputo are the newcomers to the role, while Will Frisoli and Tyler Carpenter have experienced early success in the LSM role.
- Jordan Ginder and Joe Stein are solid at the faceoff X. They are winning 63 percent of the draws and have picked up 24 ground balls on 54 wins.
- Turner Uppgren has started both contests and owns a 12.76 goals against average and a .385 save percentage. Andrew Bonafede came off the bench at High Point and Denver and has 12 saves and a 9.96 goals against average and a .522 save percentage.
DUKE AGAINST TOP 10 FOES
- When Duke and Denver meet Saturday, it will be the 107th time the Blue Devils have played a top 10 opponent since 2007. Duke is 66-40 in the games and Duke is 26-23 when ranked lower.
- Duke and Penn are meeting as top 10 foes for the first time in series history.
SCOUTING PENN
- Penn led for 43:24 against No. 4 Maryland, but a 6-0 fourth quarter by the Terps lifted the host to the narrow 17-15 victory to spoil the Quakers' season opener. Penn dropped to seventh in the polls after the loss. The Quakers were picked to finish second in the Ivy League behind Yale.
- Sean Lulley led the charge on offense with four goals and six points, while both Sam Handley and Dylan Gergar had five points apiece. Handley was voted a USILA Preseason All-American and to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List.
- Consensus preseason All-American Kyle Gallagher is back at the X and won 18-of-35 restarts last weekend. The senior specialist was a third-team pick last year and ranked second nationally in faceoffs won with 270 and was fourth in ground balls per game.
- Senior Mark Evanchick, a preseason All-America pick, anchors the defense as two-time All-Ivy selection. He had one caused turnover last weekend.
UP NEXT
- Duke returns home for a two-game set next weekend. The Blue Devils host Richmond, Feb. 28 at 5 p.m., and Furman March 1 at 1 p.m.
