Williamsburg, Va. – Sophomore
Anna Callahan's career-high five points on three goals and two assists led No. 22/17 Blue Devils (4-2) past William & Mary, 20-8, on Wednesday night in Williamsburg, Va.
Duke scored 20 or more goals for the fifth time out of the last six games, continuing to be one of the most potent offenses in the country. Tonight's 20 goals at William & Mary came from just 10 student-athletes.
The Blue Devils got on the board first as Callahan put one in the back of the cage off an assist from
Catriona Barry. William & Mary (1-4) responded with two quick goals of its own to take a 2-1 lead.
Duke did not trail long, netting seven straight from seven different scorers over the next 17 minutes. After William & Mary scored to end the Blue Devils' run, the visitors closed the half on a 4-1 run and entered the break leading 12-4.
Six different Blue Devils scored over the first 10 minutes of the second half to extend Duke's lead to 18-4 with 20 minutes remaining. The Tribe showed signs of life, scoring three in a row before
Maddie Jenner and Barry scored their second and third of the night, respectively, to add insurance.
After scoring her first career hat trick and a career-high four points against George Washington last Saturday, Callahan came out strong at William & Mary for her second career hat trick and set a new career-high five points.
Chase Henriquez got the start in goal for the second consecutive game to improve to 2-0 on the year. Henriquez made a season-high 10 saves in 45:30 between the pipes.
Jenner, the nation's leader in the circle, gathered 13 draw controls while
Callie Humphrey caused four turnovers, the most for a Blue Devil in a single game this season.
The Tribe was led by Belle Matire with two goals and an assist.
The Blue Devils turn their sights to conference play as they travel to South Bend, Ind., Sunday for their ACC opener versus No. 2 Notre Dame. Opening draw is slated for 1 p.m., and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
