DURHAM, N.C. – The fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team looks to cap the indoor portion of the spring season on a strong note at this weekend's ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago, Ill. The Blue Devils will open against No. 6 Pepperdine Friday at 1 p.m. (EST).
The tournament consists of each team that won its respective ITA Kick-Off Weekend regional. Schools from seven NCAA conferences will be represented. Duke is one of six ACC teams competing in the event this weekend.
The Waves are no strangers to the Blue Devils, as the two teams have met 12 times dating back to 1987. Overall, the Blue Devils hold a 7-5 series advantage, with the most recent matchup coming in last season's indoor championships where Duke emerged with a 4-0 victory in the quarterfinals in Seattle, Wash.
Should Duke advance, the Blue Devils will face the winner of No. 3 Georgia and No. 11 Virginia. The rest of Duke's bracket includes No. 2 North Carolina, No. 7 NC State, No. 14 Arizona State and No. 17 Princeton.
Pepperdine played host to the 2020 ITA Kick-Off Weekend two weeks ago, defeating the likes of UNLV and Arkansas to claim the crown, going 4-0 and 4-1 respectively.
Senior Ashley Lahey remained No. 1 in the ITA singles rankings this week after sweeping her opponents last weekend and an undefeated fall season, winning the 2019 Oracle/ITA Masters, the Women's Collegiate Invitational and the ITA All-American Championships. Lahey has still yet to be beaten, as she took a 6-0, 6-4 win over UNLV's No. 1 Izumi Asano followed by a 6-3, 6-2 win over Arkansas No. 1.
Rounding out Pepperdine's ranked singles players are No. 36 Anastasia Iamachkine, No. 37 Jessica Failla and No. 124 Lisa Zaar. The Waves do not have a doubles team ranked in the latest ITA rankings.
The Blue Devils started off the year strong, blanking their first four opponents (Grand Canyon, Elon, Kansas State and Tulsa) before dropping a 4-2 decision on the road at No. 12 Ohio State over the weekend. The Blue Devils bounced back with a 4-2 win over Illinois on Sunday. Duke has also given up the doubles point in the last two contests.
Duke was strongly represented in the latest ITA singles and doubles rankings that was released Feb. 5. Headlining the fifth-ranked Blue Devils is junior
Kelly Chen at No. 10, freshman
Chloe Beck at No. 17, sophomore
Margaryta Bilokin at No. 74 and senior
Meible Chi at No. 89. Duke also boasts one doubles team as Beck and Chi hold the No. 27 spot despite not seeing action together so far this spring.
