DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's lacrosse team kicked off the season with a dominant 22-7 win over Gardner-Webb on Friday evening in Koskinen Stadium. Duke head coach
Kerstin Kimel registered her 300th career victory, becoming just the seventh active Division I coach to reach the milestone.
Duke, led by freshman
Caroline DeBellis with seven points by the way of three goals and four assists, netted 22 goals from 14 different scorers.
The Blue Devils started the game strong, opening on an 8-0 run in the first 16 minutes.
Maddie Jenner and DeBellis established a connection in the attack early with DeBellis assisting Jenner on three of the goals during the run.
Katie Cronin,
Anna Callahan, DeBellis,
Veronica Hineman and
Catherine Cordrey all added goals throughout that span as well.
After the Runnin' Bulldogs scored their first goal of the game, Duke closed the half on a 7-1 run to lead 15-2 at the half. DeBellis,
Catriona Barry,
Ainsley Thurston (twice),
Olivia Rubin, Cronin and
Madison Dunk all scored during the stretch. Thurston's goal, assisted by Callahan, was the first goal of her career.
Gardner-Webb scored first in the second half before
Abby Landry netted a pair and DeBellis found the goal once again to give Duke a 18-3 lead with 22:14 remaining. The Runnin' Bulldogs responded with a three-goal stretch, all coming off free position shots until
Lexi Schmalz broke up the action with an unassisted goal to record her first goal as a Blue Devil.
The visitors scored once more before Duke closed out the game on a three-goal run courtesy
Mary Markwordt, Schmalz and
Virginia Oursler. Markwordt made her first appearance since 2018 after sitting out last season due to injury. Oursler tallied her first career point in a Duke uniform.
The Blue Devils assisted half of their goals with DeBellis tallying four, followed by Callahan, Carner, Cronin, Landry, Rubin and Thurston all with one.

Cubby Biscardi led Duke defensively with two caused turnovers apiece.
Duke outshot Gardner-Webb 44-11 and outdid their opponents at the draw 20-9, led by Jenner and Hineman with eight and five, respectively. In addition, the Blue Devils were nearly perfect on clears, going 11-of-12.
Gardner-Webb was led by Talen Francis with three goals.
Duke is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 9 at noon as it hosts the No. 3 Northwestern Wildcats in Koskinen Stadium. The game will be aired on ACC Network Extra.
