CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Using a 10-0 late inning run, the Duke softball program opened its fall ball slate with a 10-1 win over Charlotte on Saturday afternoon at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium.
The Blue Devils tallied 16 hits in the win, outhitting the 49ers 16-6. The Blue Devils were able to capitalize on three Charlotte errors to secure a win. Leading the way on offense was sophomore
Kelly Torres, who went 4-for-4 with a solo home run and three three RBI. Freshman
Ana Gold delivered an immediate impact with two home runs, while graduate students
Rachel Crabtree and
Jameson Kavel combined for five hits and two RBI.
Charlotte opened the day with an RBI single from Lexi Wagner to lead 1-0 in the third inning. It would be the only blemish on a great day from
Shelby Walters, who struck out five batters over four innings as the starter. The Blue Devils kept the Charlotte offense in check with two more scoreless innings from sophomore
Lillie Walker.
After no runs through five, the offense received a jolt from the newcomer Gold. The freshman scored the first run of fall ball with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. From there, the runs would come in bunches, as the Blue Devils tagged Charlotte for four runs in the inning.
"My biggest goal as a freshman is to be able to contribute to the team as quickly possible to help reach our goals," said Gold. "Today felt so surreal and I knew that when I stepped onto the field, I just had to compete and have fun. The whole game was exciting, and the team was super supportive of each other. Everyone showed up with energy and ready to play and I can't wait to see what Team 5 will do."
While the Blue Devils were busy scoring six more runs the rest of the game, sophomore
Claire Davidson was stellar at the plate and in the circle, striking out four over three innings pitched, while notching a key double off the right field wall. Gold would add another home run in the game, while senior
Angie Biele shut the door with a scoreless 10th inning.
The Blue Devils will conclude the two-day stint in Charlotte on Sunday, matching up with South Carolina at 12 p.m.
