DURHAM – The Duke softball program is back in action for its sixth of eight fall ball games, hosting Campbell on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Duke Softball Stadium.
The Blue Devils continue to score an abundance of runs this fall, outscoring opponents 47-3 and going 5-0, while limiting opponents to no more than one run a game.
Following the game on Friday, Saturday will mark the first alumni game in program history, with the game set to begin at 1 p.m. The alumni game will welcome back original members of the first four teams in program history and run for five innings.
LAST TIME OUT
The Blue Devils earned a weekend sweep, cruising to a 19-0 win over East Carolina on Oct. 16 and outlasting UNC-Greensboro, 4-1 on Oct. 17. Both games were played in seven innings, after playing the first three games of the fall in 10 innings.
The offense jumped on the Pirates in the first game, scoring 11 runs in the first inning. Senior
Caroline Jacobsen hit one of her three home runs in the game, when she launched a grand slam as part of the opening frame. Freshman
Ana Gold and junior
Kamryn Jackson each added home runs in the contest, as the Blue Devils set a Duke fall ball record in runs, besting the 16 scored against Winthrop on Oct. 26, 2019.
Pitching was a headliner in the second game of the weekend, as senior
Shelby Walters, graduate student
Peyton St. George and sophomore
Jala Wright combined to allow just one run and strike out eight over seven innings of work. St. George got all her strikeouts swinging and has 11 consecutive swinging strikeouts in her last five innings. Sophomore
Kelly Torres and Jackson helped give the offense what it needed, with back-to-back solo home runs in the sixth inning to pull away from the Spartans.
THE JOURNEY BEGINS
After an historic 2021 season that saw the program's first ACC Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance, the Blue Devils will open exhibition play this fall. Head coach
Marissa Young is back for her fifth season at the helm of the program, following a program-best 44-12 record last season.
Several members of the championship squad are back, including all four All-ACC honorees from a year ago. The first NFCA All-American in program history,
Deja Davis, is back for her senior year after hitting .389 with seven home runs, 28 RBI, seven triples and 14 stolen bases. Outfielder
Jameson Kavel is back as a graduate student, after earning All-ACC First Team honors following posting a .320 batting average, four home runs and 33 RBI over 56 games.
The decorated pitching duo of graduate student
Peyton St. George and senior
Shelby Walters is back to headline an experienced pitching staff. St. George was the ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player, All-ACC First Team honoree and pitched to a record of 18-8, with a 2.21 ERA over 158.2 innings, while striking out 199. Walters was equally effective, going 19-3 with a 1.28 ERA over 147.2 innings pitched, collecting 87 strikeouts.
MEET THE NEWCOMERS
The Blue Devils added eight new members to the team for the 2022 season. Seven freshmen; infielder

Also joining the team is sophomore pitcher
Jala Wright (Charlotte, N.C.), who comes home to her native North Carolina after her freshman season at Michigan State. Wright made 11 appearances and four starts in the circle as a rookie for the Spartans, pitching 25.0 innings and striking out 18 batters.
It's been a quick start for the newcomers, as Gold has three home runs this fall, while Wright has started with nine straight scoreless innings of relief pitching.
