CLEMSON, S.C. – The 11th-ranked Duke softball team opened its four-game series at No. 20 Clemson on Friday with a doubleheader sweep following a 2-0 shutout victory in game one and a 3-1 win in the nightcap at McWhorter Stadium.
The Blue Devils (26-1, 14-1 ACC) were led by strong pitching performances from senior Peyton St. George and junior Shelby Walters who tallied their 11th and 10th wins of the season, respectively. With the pair of victories, Duke extends its winning streak to 20 consecutive games while Clemson falls to 20-4 and 12-4.
Despite being limited to only two hits in the first game, Duke's bats came alive in game two as the team accounted for nine hits. Senior Jameson Kavel, junior Kristina Foreman and sophomore Kamryn Jackson led the Blue Devils throughout the twin bill with two hits on the day.
Game 1: Duke 2, Clemson 0
Clemson picked up two hits and reached on a fielder's choice in the fourth, but St. George got out of a bases-loaded jam with back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame and keep the game scoreless.
Freshman Kelly Torres, who notched Duke's first hit in the second inning, reached base on a fielding error to open the fifth. Senior Kendyl Lange took over to pinch run at first and Jackson joined her on base as she was hit in the shoulder by a pitch during the next at bat. The wheels kept moving as the two advanced on a wild pitch to place runners in scoring position. Lange then scored the first run of the contest after senior Rachel Crabtreereached base on another fielding error.
Jacobsen doubled Duke's lead to 2-0 in the sixth when she crushed her fifth home run of the season over the left field wall. Following the long ball, sophomore Gisele Tapia reached base on a Clemson fielding error before stealing second to place a runner in scoring position. Torres drew a walk on the ensuing at bat, but the Blue Devils would leave them stranded after the Tigers recorded the final out of the frame.
St. George then retired the final six Clemson batters to earn her 11th win of the 2021 campaign. The Mechanicsville, Va., native only allowed three hits in her complete game appearance in which she fanned seven batters.
Game 2: Duke 3, Clemson 1
Duke saw six baserunners in the first three innings, including singles from Jackson in the second and Kavel in the third, but the Blue Devils couldn't bring any runs across the plate.
Jackson garnered her second hit of the contest in the fourth, ripping a shot to right field. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a passed ball. Freshman Sarah Goddard then drew a walk to put runners on the corners, but a lineout double play ended Duke's scoring threat.
Clemson struck first in the fourth after using an RBI double to right field to score a runner from second. The Blue Devils answered by scoring one run in each of the next three innings to register the come-from-behind win.
The rally started in the fifth when a heads-up baserunning play by Kavel tied the game at 1-1. Goddard then plated the go-ahead run in the sixth when she tallied her first career triple to score Jackson, who had reached on a fielder's choice during the previous at bat. Duke added two more hits and tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to ultimately put the game away.
Walters threw a gem, hurling a complete game in which she also gave up just three hits and one unearned run. She also picked up four strikeouts to collect the 10th victory of her junior campaign.
The Blue Devils and Tigers return to action for game three of the series on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. and will be televised on ACC Network as Jenn Hildreth and Amanda Scarborough will have the call.
