No. 11 Duke Finishes Virginia Invite with Nine Wins

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 11 Duke rowing team placed first in nine races at Rivanna Reservoir as two days of competition at the Virginia Invite concluded Saturday.

The Blue Devils' Second Varsity Eight boat, which was named the ACC Crew of the Week on March 10, captured the top finish in each of its three races.

The start of the regatta on Friday was delayed until 6 p.m. due to windy conditions. Duke faced No. 3 Virginia in its first set of races and earned a first-place time of 6:48.5 in the 2V8.

The Blue Devils got Saturday kicked off in strong fashion, sweeping Central Florida with five wins. Duke grabbed a narrow victory in the Varsity Eight Race, as the crew coxed by graduate student Tara Fagan clocked a finishing time of 6:50.1, just 1.4 seconds ahead of the Knights' 6:51.5. The Blue Devils' Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four boats each won their race by eight or more seconds.

Duke wrapped up the invitational meet by taking three of four races against ninth-ranked Tennessee. The 2V4 lineup of Megan Knauer (coxswain), Laura Navarrete, Kelsey Lackey, Kathryn Nash, and Sarah Hubner registered its best time of the weekend, coming in at 7:46.6. The V8 crew's time of 6:45.4 also marked its fastest over the two-day event.

"Duke had another solid weekend of racing," said head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno. "I think each crew learned a little more about themselves over each of their three races. We had some excellent competition and we're excited to keep pushing forward this season."

The Blue Devils are back in action on Saturday, April 3, when they travel to the Columbus, Ohio for the Big Ten/ACC Double Dual.
