DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 7 Duke women's lacrosse team is set for the NCAA quarterfinal, its 16th program history, Saturday as it takes on No. 2 Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m., (ET) on ESPN3.
OPENING DRAW
The two squads will face off for the 21st time in school history as Northwestern holds a 16-4 advantage in the series history. The Blue Devils last defeated the Wildcats in 2018 in Durham and are 0-9 in Evanston. Duke looks to be the first team this season to knock off undefeated Northwestern (14-0), who only played Big Ten opponents per conference guidelines until the NCAA Tournament.
The winner of Saturday's contest will advance to the national semifinals and will play the winner of No. 4 Boston College and No. 5 Notre Dame Friday, May 28 in Towson, Md.
LAST TIME OUT
The seventh-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team picked up two victories in the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament, defeating Mount St. Mary's (19-3) and No. 12 Maryland (13-12) at Koskinen Stadium in Durham.
Rookie
Katie DeSimone and graduate student
Gabby Rosenzweig led the Blue Devils offensively over the two games. The dangerous duo combined for 22 points as DeSimone scored eight goals and dished three assists while Rosenzweig added three goals and eight assists.
Junior goalkeeper
Sophia LeRose was tabbed IWLCA Defensive Player of the Week after her weekend performance. The San Diego, Calif., native made 18 saves in her two games, while only giving up 14 goals, and added seven ground balls. In the victory over Maryland, Duke was held without a goal for the final 20 minutes as the Terps tallied six goals in the second half to pull within one (13-12) late in the contest. The Terps had a last second opportunity to tie the game as Libby May got a good look at the cage but LeRose stood her ground day and collected her 11th save to secure the win. LeRose added three ground balls as well to follow her career-best save percentage showing from Friday's win over Mount St. Mary's (.778).
This season, LeRose owns a 10.18 goal against average to rank 15th in the nation and fourth in the ACC. She also sports a .467 save percentage between the pipes.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Northwestern enters the weekend tabbed the No. 2 team in the nation with a flawless 14-0 record. The Wildcats have only played Big Ten opponents this season per conference rules.
The Wildcats are led by attacker and 2021 Tewaaraton Award finalist Izzy Scane. The Big Ten Attacker of the Year is one of the most dominant offensive players in the country, scoring 89 goals in 14 games for an average of 6.23 goals per game. She also has 21 assists for 110 points this season. Northwestern is also led by Lauren Gilbert (68 points) and Erin Coykendall (60 points).
Goalkeeper Madison Doucette owns a 10.31 goals against average with nearly 800 minutes between the pipes. She also sports a .418 save percentage.
DUKE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
The Blue Devils garnered the program's 20th selection to the NCAA Tournament and are 26-19 all time. Duke has made seven trips to the national semifinals (1999, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2015). Duke has made the quarterfinals in 12 of its past 13 appearances.
Under the direction of head coach
Kerstin Kimel, the program is 7-8 in quarterfinal contests but 0-3 against Northwestern in the tournament.
FIRST NCAA BERTH FOR THE 2021 SQUAD
Blue Devils received their first NCAA Tournament bid since 2016 and the first appearance for the 2021 squad. The only member of the 2021 team to have NCAA Tournament experience outside of the coaches is graduate student
Gabby Rosenzweig. Rosenzweig never advanced past the second round, so this will be a new experience for the entire squad.
Rosenzweig saw action in the NCAA Tournament as an undergrad at Penn in three of her four years - there was no NCAA Tournament in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through her tournament career, Rosenzweig has tallied eight goals and 19 assists in six games.
DUKE DOMINANCE AT THE DRAW
The Blue Devils are 12-5 this season when winning the draw. Duke continues to rank among the national leaders in the category. Duke is second in the country in draw control percentage (.643) and seventh in draw controls per game (16.78).
Junior
Maddie Jenner leads the ACC with 10.00 draw controls per game and is third nationally heading into Saturday's contest. Jenner owns 180 draw controls this spring and has posted a season-high 15 three times this season, just one off her career high. Over her career, she has amassed 364 total draws as the nation's NCAA active career leader in draw controls per game (8.21).
DYNAMIC DUO
The attack duo of rookie
Katie DeSimone and
Gabby Rosenzweig has been a point of emphasis all season and was on full display last weekend in the opening two rounds. The dangerous duo combined for 22 points in Duke's two games as DeSimone scored eight goals and dished three assists and Rosenzweig added three goals and eight assists.
DeSimone has registered a hat trick eight times this season to Rosenzweig's 12. Rosenzweig also ranks ninth on the NCAA active career leaders charts with 309 points (146 goals, 163 assists).
FAMILIAR FACES PART II
Much like last weekend's contest against Maryland, the game against Northwestern will feature familiar faces as Duke head coach Kerstin (Manning) Kimel and Northwestern head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller played together one year while at Maryland. Both saw great success during their times with the Terps and overlapped one year in 1993 when Kimel was a senior.
Kimel helped lead the Terrapins to four consecutive national semifinal appearances and the 1992 National Championship. Kimel was a two-time All-America selection and the 1993 NCAA National Defensive Player of the Year, appearing in Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd."
Amonte Hiller was a four-time All-American under former Maryland head coach Cindy Timchal, ending her career as the school's all-time record holder for career goals (187), assists (132) and points (319).
BARRY APPROACHES 100 CAREER POINTS
Midfielder
Catriona Barry is just two away from 100 career points as she owns 70 goals and 28 assists. This season, she has five hat tricks and tied her career-high four goals twice, including Duke's thrilling ACC Championship opening game against Notre Dame. The Napa, Calif., native also has reeled in 150 draw controls, 69 ground balls and 51 caused turnovers over her career.
DEFENSE RANKS AMONG THE BEST
Duke's defense has been on lock all season and is 12th in the nation in caused turnovers per game (10.11) and leads the ACC. Duke is also third in the conference in the ground balls game (15.22). Graduate defender
Callie Humphrey leads the ACC with 1.83 caused turnovers per game and is tied for 25th in the nation. Duke ranks ninth in the nation in clearing percentage (0.913) and Northwestern is 35th (0.874).
