Setting the Scene...
The 16th-ranked Duke women's basketball team (11-2, 2-1) will open a stretch on Thursday that features three games in six days, which tips off with Virginia Tech (11-4, 3-1) on Jan. 13 at 6 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The game will be carried live on ACC Network with Jenn Hildreth (PXP) and Debbie Antonelli (Color) calling the action. It will also be aired on the Blue Devil Sports Network via WDNC AM 620, the Varsity Network app and www.GoDuke.com with Chris Edwards (PXP) on the air at 5:45 p.m.
What is Next?...
The Blue Devils will hit the road for the first of two straight games beginning at NC State (Jan. 16), then at Miami (Jan. 18). Both games will be on ACC Network.
A Look at Virginia Tech...
Virginia Tech had its four-game winning streak snapped Sunday with a 71-46 loss at North Carolina. The Hokies are now 5-2 on the road this season. On the year, Virginia Tech has been led by Elizabeth Kitley (18.5 points, 10.8 rebounds), Aisha Sheppard (13.3 points, 3.1 rebounds) and Kayana Traylor (10.2 points).
The Series with Virginia Tech...
Duke and Virginia Tech will meet for the 33rd time in school history, with the Blue Devils leading the series 27-5. The Blue Devils won 26 out of the first 28 contest in the series with the Hokies, but Virginia Tech has won three out of the last four games.
In games played in Durham, N.C., Duke holds a 14-2 ledger against the Hokies.
When Duke and Virginia Tech played on Dec. 30, the Hokies scored the most points in the series and turned in the largest margin of victory for Virginia Tech in the series.
Storylines/Other Blue Devil Notes...
• Rookie
Shayeann Day-Wilson is the only freshman in the ACC that leads their team in scoring with a 12.0 per game average. Day-Wilson is the only rookie in the ACC to also lead her team in 3-point field goals made (27).
• Two of the top 3-point shooting teams in the nation will hit the hardwood on Thursday in Cameron. Virginia Tech ranks first in the ACC and Duke is fourth.
• Duke features six different Blue Devils that have led the squad in scoring at least one game --

Vanessa de Jesus came off the bench for the first time in her career against Notre Dame and played a career-low three minutes. She had started the first 15 games of her collegiate career.

• After opening the season averaging 15.3 points over the first seven games,
Celeste Taylor averaged 6.8 points over the next four contests. She came up big against Notre Dame, draining back-to-back 3-pointers in the third period to help lead Duke to a comeback victory. Taylor finished with 12 points in the contest.
• The Blue Devils held No. 1 South Carolina to a season-low 55 points and 35.1 field goal percentage.
• Duke has scored 384 points off the bench in 13 games for an average of 29.5, while its opponents are averaging only 10.2 a contest. The Blue Devils' 29.5 per game average ranks second in the ACC with NC State leading (33.4).
• In the 17 games under
Kara Lawson since arriving, Duke has scored 70+ points in 14 of the 17 contests. The Blue Devils have won every game in which they have scored 70 points or more. The only losses were to Louisville, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

Elizabeth Balogun steps on the court in 2021-22 with Duke marking the third different ACC squad she has played for. She is the first women's basketball player in ACC history to play for three different teams in the league (Louisville, Georgia Tech).

Jordyn Oliver will miss the 2021-22 season, after suffering an achilles injury over the summer.

Duke Versus Virginia Tech Take II...
Thursday's contest with Virginia Tech will be the second of two meetings between the two squads over a span of 15 days. Virginia Tech won the first meeting, 77-55 in Blacksburg, Va. Duke was without
Shayeann Day-Wilson,
Imani Lewis and
Emma Schmidt for the contest due to Duke's health and safety protocols.
It marks the quickest turnaround in the ACC regular season for Duke since the 2012-13 campaign when the Blue Devils played Maryland on Feb. 11 and 24, which was 14 days. Duke won both of those contests with the Terrapins.
The Blue Devils defeated No. 7 Maryland, 71-56, at home on Feb. 11 and then won 75-59 in College Park against the eighth-ranked Terrapins.

Akinbode-James Nets Career High...
Senior
Onome Akinbode-James collected a career-high 16 points on the road at Syracuse in only 18 minutes of action. She hit 5-of-9 field goals, 6-of-6 free throws, grabbed six boards, had two blocks and one steal.
Since being inserted into the starting lineup three games ago, Akinbode-James has averaged 8.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks a game. She has hit 58.8 percent from the field as well.
Goodchild Taking Advantage of Time...
Over the last four games, senior
Miela Goodchild has seen her minutes go up as she has played 22 or more minutes in each of those contests. She has averaged 9.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.0 steals during that stretch. Goodchild has hit 10-of-20 treys in those games.
Goodchild hit only 6-of-21 treys over the first nine games of the season.
She was inserted into the starting lineup two games ago and has averaged 13.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals. Goodchild has hit 9-of-13 field goals and 7-of-11 treys in those contests.
