DURHAM - The Duke swimming and diving team split meets with Virginia Tech on Saturday at the Taishoff Aquatic Center to open the 2022-23 season. The Blue Devils' women topped No. 24 Virginia Tech, 183.5-116.5, while the men lost to the 11th-ranked Hokies 107-193.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the 200-yard medley relay, Emma Shuppert, Kaelyn Gridley, Aleyna Ozkan and McKenna Smith took home first place in the event, swimming a time of 1:39.62. The Blue Devils also finished second with the team of Emily Lenihan, Sarah Foley, KyAnh Truong and Sarah Snyder posting a time of 1:40.08.
- On the men's side of the 200-yard medley relay the team of David Chang, Cole Reznick, Brad Sanford and Coleman Kredich finished first with a time of 1:28.76.
- The Blue Devils' women once again finished one-two in the 1000-yard freestyle with Yixuan Chang (10:07.56) and Audrey Portello (10:10.91). Senior Brendan Driscoll finished appeared on the podium with a third-place finish, swimming a time of 9:28.22.
- Foley collected a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 1:47.47. In the men's heat, graduate David Hallaron placed second swimming a time of 1:38.76.
- In event eight of the afternoon, Shuppert (54.45) and redshirt senior Easop Lee (54.56) took two podium spots, finishing second and third. The Duke women led the 24th-ranked Hokies 49-25.
- In the 100-yard breaststroke the Duke women swept the podium with freshman Gridley (1:01.23), Catherine Belyakov (1:02.80) and Portello (1:05.84) scoring for the Blue Devils. In the men's heat, Reznick placed first with a time of 55.09.
- Freshman Martina Peroni (1:59.05) and graduate transfer Mia Leko (2:00.27) collected podium spots, finishing first and second for the Blue Devils. Senior Chris Dalla Valle finished third for the men's team in the 200-yard butterfly, swimming a time of 1:51.43.
- In the 50-yard freestyle, Kredich (20.67), Charlie Gingrich (20.76) and Sanford (20.92) swept the podium for the Duke men, while Smith (23.31) and Snyder (23.56) placed in second and third for the women to extend their lead.
- The women swept another event in the 200-yard breaststroke, as Foley (2:11.94), Gridley (2:13.40) and Belyakov (2:18.09) helped the Blue Devils extend their lead over the Hokies to 128.5-78.5.
- The 200-yard IM event featured the Blue Devils' women team sweeping the podium yet again, with Foley (1:59.57), Belyakov (2:02.81) and Peroni (2:03.88) all scoring points. The men also scored points with a second and third place finish by Michael Jiang (1:51.27) and Reznick (1:51.40).
- In the diving portion of the meet, three Blue Devils scored points for the women with Kate Mullin leading the way in second place with a 294.00 score. Freshman Josie Zillig placed fourth, posting a score of 274.05, while senior Ali Watson took home fifth with a score of 271.13 on the 1-meter board.
- In the 3-meter event, Mullin (330.75) and Watson (323.70) placed one-two to solidify the women's victory, while freshman Yannis Schattman posted a score of 403.28 on the men's side.
