DURHAM – Duke attackmen
Brennan O'Neill and
Dyson Williams combined for 12 points and the Blue Devils defense held Denver scoreless for 21 minutes to post a convincing 19-10 victory over the No. 11 Pioneers in non-conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
O'Neill and Williams both had four goals and two assists apiece to lead the seventh-ranked Blue Devils. Duke improves to 4-1, bouncing back from a setback to Jacksonville the week prior. Denver falls to 2-1 on the year.
"It was a beautiful sunny day in Durham, and I thought the crowd was great for a game in February," said head coach
John Danowski. "I thought the community really responded and that was a cool thing to be a part of."
The first quarter was a shootout with the teams ending the period all square at 5-5. Sophomore
Aidan Danenza put Duke on the scoreboard first 2:30 into the game and the Blue Devils led 2-1 midway through the period.
Denver responded with four unanswered in a span of 3:25 to jump ahead 5-3, but it was all Duke over the next 18 minutes as the Blue Devils took a 9-6 advantage into halftime.
"Practice this week was dedicated to getting back to the fundamentals and getting back to really dialing in on the simple things," Danowski said. "I thought guys were anxious to prove that last Sunday was not them. So, I think we were a little angry all week in practice and I think that was helpful today."
Williams started the 6-1 spurt with a goal at the 3:08 mark of the first quarter and sophomore
Charlie O'Connor scored a huge momentum goal just over a minute later to tie the game after one period.
"Dyson is terrific inside and he's good on man-up and he's good off the ground," Danowski added. "He's a complementary player to the other five guys on the field. He knows how to get open and he knows how to finish the ball. He's a piece of the whole picture, a very big piece, and he can score in many different ways."
Nakeie Montgomery got into the scorebook one minute into the second frame and
Cameron Mulé threw in a man-up goal 57 seconds later for the two-goal advantage at 13:03.
Denver's Alex Simmons pulled the Pioneers within one, 39 seconds later, but it was all Blue Devils for the next 21 minutes as they dominated Denver on both ends of the field.
Duke outscored Denver 6-0 during that stretch for a commanding 13-6 lead, getting goals from five different players.
Sean Lulley contributed a goal and an assist in the run, while O'Neill had two scores. Three of the markers were assisted with Lulley, Montgomery and O'Neill dishing the ball.
Lulley finished his day with two goals and two assists, while Montgomery notched his second hat trick of the season. Nine different Blue Devils scored a goal and 11 had at least one point.
Defensively, Duke was outstanding in that span of 21 minutes. The Blue Devils forced nine turnovers, allowed 16 shots and
Mike Adler made four saves. Adler finished the game with 10 saves on 42 shots faced.
After Denver pulled back within five late in the third quarter, Duke locked up the victory with six more unanswered for a 19-8 lead with 10:28 to play in the final stanza. Six different players had goals in that stretch and four different Blue Devils registered assists.
Shortstick midfielder
Jake Caputo had a strong afternoon with two caused turnovers and a goal, while
Wilson Stephenson forced a pair of turnovers and picked up two ground balls. Junior longstick midfielder
Tyler Carpenter proved again to be a menace both defensively and on the faceoff wing with seven ground balls and an assist.
Sophomore
Jake Naso had a strong showing at the faceoff, winning 16-of-28 and picking up five ground balls. Duke was buoyed by outstanding wing play from
Garrett Leadmon, Carpenter,
Cole Krauss and Montgomery during the game.
JJ Sillstrop paced the Denver attack with five goals and an assist, while Johnny Marrocco had two goals. Between the pipes, Jack Thompson made 14 saves for the Pioneers.
Duke is right back in action Tuesday against No. 17 Delaware at Koskinen Stadium. Faceoff is set for 3 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
