OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The No. 14 Duke rowing team took first place in each of its 12 races on Saturday to open the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invite on Melton Hill Lake in strong fashion.
Duke and No. 11-ranked Yale (eight races) were the only two programs that swept Saturday's slate. The Blue Devils got the morning session started with the Third Varsity Four posting a time of 7:34.391 to outrace Notre Dame and Tulsa. The Varsity Eight then notched a top time of 6:20.264, over six seconds ahead of Indiana and just under 10 ticks in front of No. 17 Wisconsin. The Varsity Four, Third Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four kept the momentum rolling with wins of their own, each by a margin of at least three seconds.
The 2V4 put together a dominant performance to wrap up Duke's morning races, as its time of 7:18.716 was well ahead of second-place Indiana (7:35.116). That lineup featured two freshmen in coxswain
Audrey Kline and stroke
Lauren Brandmeyer, as well as graduate student
Sydney Cikovic and juniors
Shae Simpson and
Caeley Tierney.
The afternoon races saw more of the same from the Blue Devils, who were led off by the 3V4 beating No. 16 Alabama head-to-head by over three seconds. The five subsequent victories included a pair of narrow finishes, as the V4 and 2V8 each pulled away by a slim margin to solidify the complete-day sweep.
Duke looks to carry its success into Sunday morning when it concludes the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invite with six races. The 3V4 will kick things off at 9:46 a.m. when it takes on Alabama, Notre Dame and Tulsa.
