SANTIAGO β Former Duke field hockey standouts
Leah Crouse and
Jillian Wolgemuth are headed to the Pan American Games semifinals with the U.S. Women's National Team following a second-place finish in Pool A after group action concluded Monday evening.
The 15th-ranked U.S. Women's National Team captured wins over Trinidad & Tobago (15-0) and No. 25 Uruguay (3-0) to take second behind group winner No. 3 Argentina.
Behind a three goal second quarter, the United States secured the second-place finish in Pool A and a spot in the semifinals.
With the victory against Uruguay, the USWNT will play No. 14 Chile, who finished first in Pool B, in the Semifinals on Thursday, November 2 at 6:45 p.m. ET. They also clinched a spot int an FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifier, taking place in January 2024.
Crouse started all three group games for the United States, scoring a goal against Trinidad & Tobago. Wolgemuth came off the bench to play in the back for the United States in all three contests.
"Today was a massive win and as there was so much riding on it there was a lot of potential pressure and pitfalls," said David Passmore, USWNT Head Coach, following the game. "Uruguay has been improving significantly over the past year and set their stall out by sitting deep and condensing space but we were patient and found ways to accelerate the play through our wide defenders. We were resolute defensively and I don't recall them having a clear chance in the first half."
