CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Duke volleyball team secured a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 29-27, 25-14) at Virginia Friday evening in ACC volleyball action.
With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 18-9 overall and 9-7 in the ACC.
Duke was once again led by Gracie Johnson and Kerry Keefe with 13 and 10 kills, respectively, as Keefe hit .258 percent for the match. Lizzie Fleming added nine kills and no errors to hit .500 percent as setter Emma Worthington dished 38 assists. Libero Madison Bryant tallied 15 digs, while Jess Robinson paced the defense with four blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke got ahead 1-0 in the match by way of a .239 hitting percentage in the first set. The Cavaliers held on and kept it close, but couldn't find an answer for Johnson as she collected seven early kills to lead all attackers.
- Duke continued to swing hard and jump high in the second frame as it posted a .293 offensive clip. Keefe tallied five kills on 11 swings to hit .455 percent while Robinson's .750 percentage helped give the Blue Devils a 2-0 advantage.
- With the match on the line, Virginia struggled to settle into any offensive rhythm in the third set, partially because of Duke's tough blocking unit. Six different Blue Devils registered a block to limit the Cavaliers to a negative hitting percentage (-.167).
- Fleming and Rachel Richardson headlined Duke in the third set with eight combined kills on no errors.
NOTABLES
- This was head coach Jolene Nagel's 701st career victory and her 498th at the helm of the Blue Devils. With two matches left of the regular season, she is two wins shy of 500 at Duke.
- The all-time series moves to 60-13 in favor of the Blue Devils.
- Duke has won 29 of the last 30 meetings.
- The Blue Devils have won six of their last seven contests this fall.
- Keefe has tallied at least 10 kills in all but three matches this year.
- Keefe added three aces this evening. She owns 28 for the year.
- Virginia was led by Abby Tadder with nine kills.
