DURHAM – Duke sophomore attackman
Andrew McAdorey scored three goals and dished out six assists to lead the fourth-ranked Blue Devils to a commanding 17-9 victory over No. 7 Loyola in non-conference men's lacrosse action Friday night.
The win is the third straight for Duke (6-1) over a top-20 opponent and the second versus a top-10 foe this season. Three different Blue Devils had hat tricks with
Garrett Leadmon and
Brennan O'Neill both dropping in three goals.
How it Happened
- The Blue Devils jumped all over the Greyhounds, taking a 3-0 lead before Loyola even took a shot. Leadmon started the scoring 1:34 into the contest on a feed from rookie Charles Balsamo. Owen Caputo dialed one up 36 seconds later and Will Frisoli added the third 17 seconds after that. Duke's first three goals came in a span of 53 seconds.
- McAdorey put up his first two assists with passes to Leadmon and Dyson Williams as the Blue Devils went up 5-0 at the 7:19 mark of the opening session. Loyola got on the board with 6:18 remaining as Duke's offense rolled to an 8-2 lead at the first break.
- Duke continued to fire on all cylinders in the second quarter, outscoring Loyola, 6-0, for a 14-2 halftime advantage. Five different Blue Devils scored in the spurt, including Reed Landin notching his first of the season.
- Defensively, the Blue Devils held Loyola scoreless for 17:22, forcing the Greyhounds into four second-quarter turnovers and holding them to only three shots on goal.
- In the first half, Duke outshot Loyola 32-19, won the ground ball battle, 19-8, and had just four turnovers.
- Duke's midfield contributed seven goals and three assists in the first half, while the attack unit of McAdorey, Williams and O'Neill had six goals and four assists. Caputo finished his night with a season-high four points from two goals and two assists. Aidan Danenza had a goal an assist and Ryan Mackenzie registered his first career helper.
- Loyola, trailing by 12, outscored Duke 7-3 in the second half to bring the final score to 17-9. Davis Lindsey had three goals and an assist to lead the Greyhounds.
- Jake Naso was outstanding at the faceoff yet again, winning 18-of-26 with six ground balls. In addition to scoring a goal, Frisoli picked up a career-high matching four ground balls.
- In goal, William Helm made eight saves, while Andrew Bonafede had a save on man-down to keep the Blue Devils a perfect 3-of-3 in man-down situations. Loyola goaltender Luke Staudt had 14 saves for the Greyhounds.
Notes
- Duke moves to 127-55 against top-20 opponents and 74-45 versus top-10 foes under head coach John Danowski. Duke has five more games against teams ranked in the top-20 this season.
- The Blue Devils are now 4-0 at Koskinen Stadium this season and 136-25 in home games since 2007.
- Brennan O'Neill extended his goal streak to 16 games. He has 56 goals in that stretch and is one of 10 players to have registered at least one goal in 15 straight games. His hat trick was the fourth of the season and the 24th of his career.
- Andrew McAdorey recorded a career-high nine points from three goals and six assists. He is one of seven Division I players to record at least six assists in a game this season.
- Jake Naso won 18 faceoffs to push his career total to 588. He is 12 wins shy of becoming just the second Blue Devil to reach 600 career faceoff wins. He has won at least 50 percent of his draws in 31 or his 38 games as the primary specialist.
- Duke held Loyola scoreless in the second quarter, the fourth time this season the Blue Devils have not allowed a goal in a period. The 17-minute scoreless stretch for the Greyhounds marked the sixth time the Blue Devils have held an opponent scoreless for at least 15 minutes.
