DURHAM β Five Blue Devils have been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association 2023 Watchlist sponsored by Victory Sports Tours. These five are considered strong candidates for NFHCA All-America accolades this year.
Paige Bitting, Alaina McVeigh, Hannah Miller,
Macy Szukics and
Charlie van Oirschot are among the 131 student-athletes from 40 different institutions selected. To be nominated for the 2023 NFHCA Watchlist, student-athletes must have been previously recognized for their outstanding field hockey abilities within the past two years (NFHCA All-Region, NFHCA All-American, All-Conference, Nexus Championship selection, AAU Junior Olympic Games selection, NCAA All-Tournament Team, and/or U.S. National or International Team roster).
Bitting and Szukics are back after successful rookie seasons with the Blue Devils. Β Bitting earned 15 starting nods on Duke's backline and Szukics contributed two goals and two assists from the midfield in her first year in a Duke uniform. The pair was in the starting lineup in the season-opening win versus Indiana with Szukics tallying Duke's second score. Over the summer, Bitting helped lead her Senior Nexus squad to runner-up honors.
After missing her rookie season to injury, McVeigh has been exceptional in her return to the field. The Landsdale, Pa., native garnered a starting spot for the Blue Devils and notched the game winner against Indiana.
Veterans, and the most decorated players on the Duke roster, Miller and van Oirschot both are catalysts for the Blue Devil offense. They each registered two assists on penalty corner goals against Indiana. Miller, a starter in every game of her Duke career, was named to the U.S. Women's National Indoor Team this past summer for the upcoming FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup. The native of Malvern, Pa., currently ranks tied for 21st on the Duke career list for points (71) and 24th in goals (25).
A native of Haarlem, Netherlands, van Oirschot is a two-time All-ACC and NFHCA All-Region selection. In one season with the Blue Devils, the central midfielder registered five goals and dished out three assists. She has started all but one game in her three seasons of collegiate field hockey.
Duke, ranked 20th nationally, is 1-0 and is set to face No. 2 Northwestern and No. 3 Maryland this weekend at the ACC/B1G Cup. The Blue Devils take on the host Terrapins Sept. 1 at 5 p.m., and play the Wildcats, Sept. 3 at 12 p.m.
