Roundball Notebook: Duke Preps for Big Dance
EARLY
ACC TOURNAMENT EXIT FOR DUKE
Maryland got the better of Duke for the second time this season
Friday, upsetting the Blue Devils 83-74 in the quarterfinals of the ACC
Tournament in Greensboro Coliseum. The loss was Duke's first in the last nine
ACC Tournament games in Greensboro and Duke's first quarterfinal exit since
1997. Maryland started the game hot and never cooled off, shooting 51.0 percent
from the floor and 40.0 percent from three-point range to become only the fifth
team to shoot 50.0 percent or better against Duke this season and the sixth to
shoot at least 40.0 percent from three-point range. Duke meanwhile, had
suffered from an especially cold night from three-point range, hitting just
4-of-25 (.160) shots from three-point range.
Duke outscored Maryland 40-22 in the paint and committed just six turnovers,
but could not overcome the off-shooting night from long range. The news wasn't
all bad for Duke last weekend, however, as the Blue Devils earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Midwest Region and will play Albany in
the second round Friday in Philadelphia, Pa.

TOURNAMENT NOTES
The Blue Devils received the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region and will advance to their 18th consecutive NCAA Tournament this weekend. While advancing to the tournament is nothing new for the Blue Devils, neither is the consistent success Duke has found once in the tournament. Here are a few notes about Duke's performance in the tournament.
- Duke is 96-32 (.750) all-time in the NCAA Tournament over a span of 36 total appearances.
- Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski is 79-24 in the NCAA Tournament and has the most NCAA Tournament wins of any coach in Division I history.
- Duke is 11-2 against the 2013 NCAA Tournament field.
- Duke has played in the national championship 10 times, including eight times under Krzyzewski.
- Duke is 23-8 as the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
- Duke is 4-0 when playing NCAA Tournament games in Philadelphia, Pa. Duke played in Philadelphia during the 1992 and 2001 NCAA Championship seasons.
- Duke is 10-3 (.769) out of the Midwest Region. Duke last won the Midwest Region in 1991.
- Duke has advanced to the Final Four 15 times, including 11 times under Krzyzewski.

BLUE DEVILS AMAKER & BREY LEAD TEAMS TO NCAA BIDS
Former Duke assistant coaches Tommy Amaker and Mike Brey continue to thrive as branches on Coach K's coaching tree, as both head coaches guided their respective programs to NCAA Tournament bids this season. Amaker, who also played at Duke from 1983-87, led his Harvard Crimson to the Ivy League regular season and tournament championships and received a No. 14 seed in the West Region for his efforts. Brey, meanwhile, coached his Notre Dame Fighting Irish to the No. 7 seed in the West Region following a 25-9 regular-season finish and a semifinal appearance in the Big East Tournament.
CURRY NAMED ALL-AMERICA
Seth Curry was named to the Sporting News All-America
second team last week, becoming the 38th player in school history to earn
All-America honors. Duke has had at least one All-America selection in six
consecutive seasons and in 14 of the past 15 years. Of the 38 Duke players to
earn All-America honors, 35 have been coached by Coach K.

BLUE DEVILS EARN ACC HONORS
It was ACC awards week last week, and five Blue Devils came away
with league honors Monday. Named to the All-ACC Team were Mason Plumlee (first
team), Seth Curry (second team) and Quinn Cook (third team), while Ryan Kelly
earned honorable mention honors and Rasheed Sulaimon was named to the All-ACC
Freshman Team. Plumlee was the top vote-getter in the voting, conducted by the
Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association, drawing 73 first-team votes which was
more than any other ACC player. Duke has now had a first team All-ACC selection
in six straight seasons and three or more All-ACC picks 25 times, including 18
times under head coach Mike Krzyzewski.
PLUMLEE RECEIVES SKIP PROSSER AWARD
Two-time Academic All-America first team selection Mason Plumlee was honored prior to Duke's ACC Tournament quarterfinal matchup against Maryland with the league's prestigious Skip Prosser Award in an on-court ceremony. The award honors the ACC's top basketball scholar-athlete, a recognition Plumlee has certainly earned given his 3.36 grade point average and numerous academic and athletic accolades which include first team All-ACC, All-ACC Academic Team and finalist for the Senior CLASS Award.

AWARDS FOR CURRY
As if being named All-America and All-ACC weren't enough, even
more honors came in for Seth Curry last week. The 6-1 senior guard picked up
ACC Player of the Week honors for the second time this season Monday and also
received a spot on the USBWA All-District III Team.
DUKE
DOMINATES ACC PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS
With Seth Curry's most recent selection, Duke has earned seven ACC
Player of the Week awards this season for the most of any team in the ACC. The
next closet team was N.C. State, which earned four honors. Duke became the
first school in ACC history to have three players win the award twice, as
Curry, Ryan Kelly and Mason Plumlee all earned the honor multiple times this
season. Quinn Cook was also named ACC Player of the Week this year.

DEVILS AMONG SI'S 75 GREATEST NCAA TOURNEY PLAYERS
In celebration of the 75th year of the NCAA Men's Basketball
Tournament, the staff at Sports
Illustrated has compiled a list of the 75 greatest players in NCAA
Tournament history. Six Blue Devils grace the list, including Christian
Laettner at No. 9, Bobby Hurley at No. 31 and Grant Hill at No. 34. Also making
the list for Duke were Jason Williams (No. 45), Shane Battier (No. 52) and
Johnny Dawkins (No. 58). Also of note, Laettner's overtime buzzer-beater
against Kentucky in 1992 was named one

McROBERTS LEAD THE WAY IN ROUT OF CELTICS
Former Duke teammates Gerald Henderson and Josh McRoberts reunited
at the trade deadline when the Charlotte Bobcats acquired McRoberts in a deal
with the Orlando Magic. Those two played a significant role in Charlotte's
100-74 win over the Boston Celtics last Tuesday when Henderson scored a
career-high 35 points and McRoberts recorded his first double-double as a
Bobcat. Henderson hit 11-of-19 shots and went 12-of-12 from the free throw line
in the career-best effort, while McRoberts posted 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Since their performance against the Celtics, Henderson scored 22 points against
Toronto and 16 more against Boston two days later, while McRoberts added 10
points and nine rebounds against Toronto and nine points and 10 rebounds in
round two against the Celtics.
RIVERS
UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL HAND SURGERY
New Orleans Hornets rookie Austin Rivers underwent successful
surgery to repair a broken hand last Tuesday and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks,
effectively cutting short his first NBA season. Rivers suffered the injury on
March 6 against the Los Angeles Lakers in an effort in which he scored 10
points on 5-of-6 shooting in 15:21 of court time. Rivers had been playing some
of his best ball of the season to that point, shooting 50.1 percent from the
field and 40.0 percent from three-point range while averaging 7.1 points over
his last 10 games. Rivers had also dished out 16 assists to just four turnovers
during that span. For the season, the 10th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft
played in 61 games, averaging 23:11 minutes, 6.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.1
assists per game.
