DURHAM- Freshman
Aminah Vega blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall to lift No. 14 Duke softball over No. 6 Florida State, 2-1, on Saturday during the second game of the weekend series at Duke Softball Stadium.
The Blue Devils (26-6, 8-3 ACC) bounced back from a 4-1 loss to the Seminoles (25-7, 4-1 ACC) on Friday to tie the series up at 1-1 and hand Florida State its first conference loss. The rubber match is set for Sunday at noon at Duke Softball Stadium and will be the Blue Devils' mental health awareness game.
Freshman pitcher
Cassidy Curd earned her seventh win of the season after allowing just one run on three hits in her 6.1 innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Curd and Florida State's Allison Royalty controlled the game from inside the circle, allowing only one hit in the first three innings.
- Vega blasted a long ball over the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth to bring in junior Claire Davidson, who reached on a walk, and put the Blue Devils in front, 2-0.
- Florida State responded with a solo home run from Kaley Mudge to open the sixth inning and cut Duke's lead in half.
- The Blue Devils sparked the offense again in the home half of the inning, placing runners on the corners but nothing came from it.
- Freshman D'Auna Jennings held off Florida State's final attempt to take the lead with a diving catch at the wall to prevent the go-ahead home run off the bat of Mack Leonard.
- Junior Lillie Walker took over for Curd in the top of the seventh to register the final two outs and seal the 2-1 victory.
NOTES
- The win marked the program's 100th win at Duke Softball Stadium.
- Curd improves to 7-0 on the season and had her no-hitter bid broken up in the fifth inning after a double to left field from Jahni Kerr.
- Vega tallied her fourth home run on the year.
- Walker picked up her first career save after entering the game in the seventh and recorded the final two outs in just five pitches.
