PITTSBURGH, Pa. – No. 8 Duke softball defeated Pittsburgh, 4-3, at Vartabedian Field on Friday afternoon.
Graduate student
Deja Davis led the way with her bat after sparking the offense in the third inning with a solo blast over the left field wall. Davis finished 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Sophomore
Ana Gold and junior
Francesca Frelick followed batting 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run, respectively.
Left-handed pitcher
Cassidy Curd picked up the win in the circle after giving up just one run off three hits and punching out nine in 6.1 innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Pittsburgh's Haylie Brunson opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with a solo shot to left center field.
- Davis responded in the following frame with a long ball of her own to tie the game at 1-1.
- Gold put the Blue Devils in front with a single up the middle to score Davis, who reached on a hit-by-pitch before advancing on a sacrifice bunt.
- Freshman D'Auna Jennings drove in a pair of runs in the sixth after sending a 2-RBI double to the center field wall to bring in Frelick and classmate Kelly Torres.
- The Panthers recorded two additional runs in the home half to cut the Blue Devils' edge to one.
- Curd sat down three of the last four batters to seal the 4-3 victory.
NOTES
- Jennings extended her career-best hitting streak to 12 games, the second longest in program history behind Davis's 14-game streak in 2021.
- With the win, the Blue Devils reached a program-high 41 wins during the regular season.
- Davis tallied her fourth home run of the season during the contest.
- Curd improves her ledger to 13-1 on the year.
