DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 4 Duke field hockey team picked up its second shutout victory of the season on Sunday afternoon at Williams Field as the Blue Devils blanked Boston University, 4-0, and improved to 5-1 on the season.
Duke went up early as sophomore Marian Dickinson put a rebounded shot into the goal at the 7:14 mark and put the Blue Devils up 1-0. The goal was her fourth of the season.
Eleven minutes later, Duke midfielder Amy Stopford then put the Blue Devils up 2-0 as she slammed a penalty stroke shot past Boston goalie, Erin Prediger. Stopford is a perfect two-for-two on the season in penalty strokes.
Dickinson struck again at the 24:48 mark as senior Cara-Lynn Lopresti found the midfielder near the net, as she slipped a shot past Prediger for her fifth goal of the season and second of the day. Shortly after the halftime break, Lopresti netted a goal of her own, her fourth of the season, to put Duke on top, 4-0.
Duke held Boston to just two shots per half, as the Blue Devils allowed zero shots in the final ten minutes of the game and came away with a 4-0 win.
“We had to rebound after yesterday's loss and I think we did a good job,” said Duke head coach Beth Bozman. “I thought we moved the ball well, we had much more communication across the board and we scored. It was a tough game to rebound from but I thought we did well.”
The Terriers were able to get off just four shots on the day, while the Blue Devils took 15. Duke was given 11 penalty corners while holding Boston to zero. Junior goalie Caitlin Williams picked up two saves on the day, en route to her second shutout of the year, while Prediger recorded six saves for the Terriers.
Duke improves to 5-1 (0-1 ACC) while Boston falls even at 2-2 overall.
Today's game vs. Boston began a six-game home stand for the Blue Devils, as Duke welcomes Appalachian State and No. 3 Old Dominion to Williams Field next weekend. Both games are slated to begin at 1 pm.m.
