BOSTON, Mass. ? The Duke fencing team competed at the MIT/Brandeis Invitational on Sunday with the men finishing 4-1 and the women finishing 3-2. The men's team posted wins over Boston College, Brown, Brandeis and MIT with their lone loss coming against Harvard. The women's team defeated Boston College, Brandeis and MIT and fell to Brown and Harvard.
The women's epee squad led the way with a 5-0 record on the day. Freshman Nicole Bloom paced the epee squad with an 11-3 mark, while senior Theresa Poulos went 11-4, senior Anne Kercsmar was 10-4 and freshman Jenny Kim finished 1-1.
The women's saber squad finished 3-2 on the day with senior Allison Schafer leading the way with a 12-3 mark. Senior Annie Massart went 8-7, junior Amanda Goldenberg was 4-4 and sophomore Jessica Hancock went 3-4 for the saber squad.
The women's foil squad went 1-4 on Sunday. Junior Marilyn Tycer finished 7-8, sophomore Stephanie Butnick went 3-12, sophomore Alexandra Stein was 2-12 and freshman Noel Shaskan finished 0-1.
The men's foil and saber squads both went 3-2 on Sunday. Junior Ben Hendricks paced the foil squad with a 12-3 record on the day. Freshman Eliot Cohen went 8-7, freshman Andrew Simon was 6-0 and junior Jackson McClam finished 3-6.
Sophomore Laughlin Stewart anchored the saber squad with a 13-2 mark on Sunday. Sophomore Peter Truszkowski finished 9-6, senior Michael DiMarco went 3-9 and freshman David Eitel was 2-1 for the saber squad.
The men's epee squad finished 1-4 on Sunday with junior Zachary Moss pacing the team with a 9-3 mark. Junior Raymond Fan went 4-11, senior Theodore Lauzen was 3-12 and Simon, who fenced for both the epee and foil squads, finished 2-1.
The Blue Devils will host the Duke Duals this coming weekend in Card Gym. Air Force, Notre Dame, North Carolina and Johns Hopkins will make the trip to Durham. The men's teams will compete on Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. while the women's teams will fence on Saturday at the same times.
