BOSTON ? The Duke men's and women's track and field squads wrapped up competition Saturday afternoon at Boston University's Terrier Classic, highlighted by Bo Waggoner's school record-breaking performance in the men's 3000 and Mike Schallmo's school record 47-5 1/4 mark in the weight throw, to go along with nine IC4A qualifiers and a pair of ECAC standards on the women's side. A total of 2,200 student-athletes competed in the two-day event.
“Overall it was a great, great weekend for Duke Track & Field,” said Director of Track & Field Norm Ogilvie. “Bo Waggoner, Cory Nanni, and Sam Bowler all turned in phenomenal races as they broke into the Duke record books, and Bo is definitely backing up his appearance in the cross country NCAA Championships big-time.”
“This was a highly successful outing for the Blue Devils, and both days were everything we could have expected.”
Day two featured mostly men's events as the women completed the majority of their events yesterday, with the exception of the women's 4x800m and distance medley which were held today. The Duke women got things going on day two as the 4x800 team of Devotia Moore (2:11.9), Leslie Morrison (2:16.5), Virginia Hine (2:13.4), and Molly Lehman (2:11.2) won the event in a total time of 8:52.90, good for second all-time at Duke and another Blue Devil ECAC qualifier as the women recorded nine marks yesterday.
The women continued the hot streak in the DMR, as the foursome of Suejin Ahn, Cydney Ross, Hine, and Patricia Loughlin placed third in an ECAC qualifying time of 11:47.91 to complete the slate for the Duke women.
On the men's side, Waggoner stole the show in the final event of the day in the men's 3000. The sophomore crossed the line in a school-record breaking 8:10.62, which was an IC4A qualifier. Waggoner's time was good for ninth overall in the stacked field that included several professional and unattached runners as well as athletes from running powerhouses Auburn and Providence.
Schallmo's toss of 47-5 1/4 in the weight throw was a new Duke school record by nearly four feet. Barbas' distance of 45-10 1/2 in the event was good to move into third place in Duke history.
Nanni became the Blue Devils' second-fastest all-time 1K runner as he came through in 2:25.09 and took second place in the race, posting an IC4A standard and shaving two-and-a-half seconds off his time here last year. The finish added to Nanni's strong lead-off of Duke's winning DMR yesterday to cap off a strong weekend. Brendon Pierson came across in 2:28.58 in the 1000 as well, another IC4A qualifier as he took sixth overall.
Bowler became Duke's fourth-fastest all-time 500-meter performer as he stopped the clock in 1:04.48, an IC4A time and seventh-place overall finish. In the mile, Ryan McDermott (4:10.96) and Stephen Clark (4:11.22) both posted IC4A standards and career-best times as they took 13th and 14th, respectively. Ken Sullivan also recorded a PR in the event as he ran 4:15.56 in the mile.
In the field events, freshman Michael Barbas followed up a strong debut performance two weeks ago by throwing 52-7 ? in the shot put to break his own record at third-place all-time for Duke and record an IC4A qualifier on his sixth and final throw.
Sid Palas won the men's pole vault in with an IC4A jump of 15-9, while Jade Ellis took second by just one centimeter in the long jump as he leapt 23-7.50 for an IC4A qualifier after taking an early lead.
The Duke track & field teams will look to ride the momentum from this weekend's success into their next meet as they compete Feb. 6-7 at the Armory Collegiate in New York City.
