DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke track and field team returns to action this weekend, with over 20 competitors traveling to the 14th running of the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York, N.Y., and an additional 50 team members making the trip to Blacksburg, Va., for the sixth annual Virginia Tech Elite Meet. Nearly 100 colleges and universities are represented at this year's Armory Collegiate Invitational, with such a high level of competition that the United States Track and Field and Cross County Coaches Association designated the meet as the National Meet of the Week. Competition is expected to be just as stout at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet, with approximately 12 programs entering the weekend's contest.
Junior Elizabeth Kerpon highlights the Duke contingent competing at the Armory Collegiate Invitational, opening with 400-meter competition Friday afternoon. Kerpon toes the line one week after reclaiming the school record in the 200 (24.32) at the Penn State National Invitational last weekend. Kerpon currently holds the indoor school record at 400m with a time of 54.38.
Freshman Madeline Kopp is also slated to appear in the open 400 this weekend at the Armory Collegiate Invitational. The Rochester, N.Y., native currently ranks ninth in the conference in the 400 with a converted time of 55.14. Kopp's 55.14 is also the second fastest 400-meter time in Duke history.
The Blue Devils will enter a stacked distance medley relay team on Friday in New York, with freshman Alec Kunzweiler leading off the relay with the 1,200m leg. Kunzweiler posted a time of 4:10.61 in the mile earlier this season at the Virginia Tech Invitational. Redshirt senior Curtis Beach is slated to contribute on the 400m leg, followed by sophomore Michal Filipczak in the 800. The Niles, Ill., native currently ranks fourth in the ACC in the 800, posting a converted 800m time of 1:50.51. Junior Nate McClafferty looks to close strong for the Blue Devils in the mile leg. McClafferty is currently undefeated in the mile this season, with his most recently converted finishing time of 4:06.59 ranking fifth in the ACC. Filipczak is scheduled to compete in the open 800 Saturday afternoon, while McClafferty and Kunzweiler return to the track for the open mile, also scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Carl Heinz opens field event competition for the Blue Devils in New York, competing in the college men's high jump at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Heinz posted a season-best mark of 6-8.75 (2.05) at the Dick Taylor UNC Challenge earlier in the season. The clearance currently ranks the Oak Park, Ill., native sixth in the conference. Redshirt junior Michael Krone is also scheduled to enter the high jump, competing in the high jump championship at 3:15 Saturday afternoon. Krone cleared 6-10.75 (2.10) in the first meet of the season and sits in a tie for third place in the conference rankings.
Junior Kyle Moran moves up in distance on Friday afternoon at the Armory Collegiate Invitational, scheduled to enter the 1,000 with fellow junior Henry Farley. Moran posted a converted 800 time of 1:51.96 earlier in the season to rank him ninth in the conference at the distance. Farley and Moran join freshman Dylan Murphy in the open 800 Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Megan Clark returns to action Saturday morning, one week after setting the school record in the pole vault with a clearance of 14-0.00 (4.27) at the Hilton Garden Innvitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Fort Benning, Ga., native earned ACC Women's Co-Performer of the Week honors for her record-setting performance, for the first accolade of Clark's career. Fellow pole vaulter and conference leader in the pole vault Justin Amezquita appears in his fourth meet of the season Saturday in Blacksburg, looking to improve on his school record mark of 17-5.75 (5.33).
Joining Clark and Amezquita in the field events at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet is redshirt sophomore Stephen Boals. Boals looks to extend his three-meet winning streak Saturday. A product of Loomis, Calif., Boals secured first-place finishes at the Dick Taylor Challenge, the Hilton Garden Innvitational and the Joe Hilton Invitational this season. While competing at the Dick Taylor Challenge, Boals posted a mark of 58-1.25 (17.71), ranking him second on Duke's all-time list.
Fellow shot putter Michelle Anumba enters Saturday's meet one week after winning the Hilton Garden Innvitational in a season-best throw of 49-8.25 (15.14). Anumba's distance from last week ranks her eighth in the conference. The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native is also set to compete in the weight throw.
Senior Phil Fairleigh is slated to compete in the 3,000 at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet Saturday morning. The Cary, Ill., native drops down in distance after finishing in a 5,000m time of 14:49.1 in his first appearance of the season. Fairleigh's 14:49.1 currently ranks ninth in the conference in the event.
Currently ranked third in the ACC in the 800, junior Abby Farley returns to the 800m distance after posting a season-best time of 2:08.63. Farley is slated to also compete in the 4x800 later in the day.
Freshman Haley Meier is set to compete in the mile for the second time in her collegiate career Saturday, following a 4:47.39 effort at the Penn State National Invitational one week earlier. Meier's time currently sits in 10th-place in the conference.
Multi-event athlete and redshirt sophomore Karli Johonnot is slated to compete in four events split between Friday and Saturday. In addition to the long jump and 60-meter hurdles, both scheduled for Friday evening, Johonnot is also participating in the women's high jump Saturday morning and the 4x800 relay. Johonnot currently ranks second in the ACC in the high jump, with a school-record clearance of 5-11.50 (1.82).
The Armory Collegiate Invitational begins at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning with the women's long jump and the women's 3,000. The Virginia Tech Elite Meet kicks off at 5 p.m. with the women's long jump and the women's mile. For full results from both meets, visit the links above.
